I love being able to purchase my school books from Amazon. However, it's a good thing I ordered my book way in advance because it took a little bit of time to get here. I ordered two things and the first item got here in just days the book took about two weeks I believe but I think I'm internet spoiled on how fast things arrive normally... more

By: David McFarland Publisher: Pogue Press May 08, 2009
There are some very good reviews here so I'm not going to go into too much detail about the book. I just wanted to add my 5 stars because I think it's a very good book. I had also purchased the How-to 100 essential techniques book and reviewed it with 1 star, don't waste your money, but with The Missing Manual you're really learn how to use Dreamweaver. The beginning of each chapter has an in-depth... more

|
By: Douglas Crockford Publisher: O'Reilly Media June 27, 2008
A very good introduction to JavaScript. It only deals with the language itself, and doesn't worry about DOM scripting or implementation details and inconsistencies in different browsers; you'll need a different book for that... more

By: Matthew MacDonald Publisher: Pogue Press February 06, 2007
I think the book is great. I would give it 4 or 5 stars, but I encountered an issue which left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I downloaded the code examples and tried to run the Investment Examples file in chapter 20. When I open the file, I get this message: "Opening the VBA project in this file requires a component that is not currently installed. This file will be opened without the VBA project... more

| 5. Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning: A Harvard Business Press Book Summary in Partnership with getAbstract |
|
By: Thomas H. Davenport, Jeanne G. Harris Publisher: Harvard Business School Press March 03, 2009
I was hoping the book would delve into analytics tools and techniques, but it doesn't even get close. It pretty much explains 2 things: first, that analytics are important and second, that there are 5 stages a company must go through (from no analytical capability to corporate-wide capability). The book mentions some companies that use analytics, but again, not the specific tools.
This... more

By: David Flanagan Publisher: O'Reilly Media July 02, 2008
I am an experienced programmer, well versed in languages I have learned from O'Reilly books. I read this book cover to cover a couple of years ago. It certainly is thorough.
I have just spent six hours trying to hook in a simple javascript function to my php application. UGH! I swear some of the coding examples in the book are just plain wrong! I finally got the function... more

| 10. High Performance MySQL |
|
By: Derek Balling, Arjen Lentz, Jeremy Zawodny, Vadim Tkachenko, Peter Zaitsev, Baron Schwartz Publisher: O'Reilly Media July 28, 2008
It's a good start point into high performance tunning, but not a deep into every concept, which is not possible in a single book. The book dives into some benchmark, optimization of queries, the capabilities of every storage engine, and also its weaknesses, some compared backup strategies, replication, and master-slave configurations, all well explained, up to MySQL 5.1, but with new versions in mind... more
