| 1. Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae |
|
By: Steven Pressfield Publisher: Bantam August 31, 1999
...definitely an adult read. ...I know a U.S. Marine who got straight back from combat, read this book and said, "Whoa. ...This is pretty harsh." ...Seriously. That's not a joke.
...It may be a difficult read for most people who do not rape and pillage regularly. ...otherwise, it's well-written, and has a great plot which, I guess, makes it a great book??? ... more

| 4. Black Ops: A Presidential Agent Novel |
|
By: W.E.B. Griffin Publisher: Jove December 29, 2009
This is my first W.E.B. Griffin book. It will be my last. 800 pages (about 136,000 words) of worthless glop. There is no action in the book. The plot is virtually non-existent and meandering. The characters are shallow and seem lifeless and hollow. I stopped reading after a while and skipped through the book. Yes, it was not worth reading in its entirety. What else can I say about the book?... more

| 9. The Rising Tide: A Novel of World War II |
|
By: Jeff Shaara Publisher: Ballantine Books May 20, 2008
I have enjoyed all of Jeff Shaara's books. I particularly liked learning about Rommel in The Rising Tide. We often have a good guy/bad guy mentality and don't think of the players in WW2 as real people... more

| 10. The Killer Angels |
|
By: Michael Shaara Publisher: Ballantine Books August 12, 1987
The main characters in this book come alive. As I turned the pages it's as if I could feel the sun beating down on my back in those July days of 1863. I sensed the fear the soldiers must have had as they contemplated the charge that ended the battle. I felt the fatique of Robert E Lee, the humble courage of Joshua Chamberlain, and the pain of Armistead as he lay there dying, thinking of his old... more
