| 2. Hellboy, Vol. 1: Seed of Destruction (v. 1) |
|
By: Mike Mignola, John Byrne By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse December 10, 2003
Mike Mignola came up with Hellboy in the early 90s and somehow I'm reading it for the first time in supremely late 2009. And the funny thing is, I loved it and probably like it more now than I would of then. My tastes have changed and my appreciation for different kinds of art have changed. Hellboy's intro and the entire team involved with the book is awesome. Liz and Abe add to Hellboy like any... more

|
By: Mike Mignola By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse October 07, 2009
It's all about consistency and quality with Mignola and his incredible art style. This collection is no exception. I own all three volumes (including the original Art of Hellboy hardcover) and they're all excellent collections of his work. Highly recommended if you're familiar with and enjoy Mike Mignola's illustrations and storytelling... more

| 4. Hellboy, Vol. 8: Darkness Calls |
|
By: Mike Mignola, Duncan Fegredo, Dave Stewart Publisher: Dark Horse Comics June 09, 2008
"Darkness calls" is a tough book. Here Hellboy engages in a grand fight against "Koshchei the Deathless". The fight takes place in no other than hell. And Koshchei is literally deathless (and we find Hellboy is too). Mignola's mingleling with mythology is facinating. Fegredo's artwork and Stewart's coloring are superb (if you like style you will like this)h. All the characters have supernatural motives... more

| 5. Hellboy, Vol. 2: Wake the Devil (v. 2) |
|
By: Mike Mignola By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse December 10, 2003
When I bought Hellboy vol. 1, some of the pages started falling out. I thought this might have just been me, but when I went to check the review for it, I noticed a few other people were complaining about faulty glue in the binding. Well, so far Vol. 2 has failed to do the same, and I thought it worth mentioning that this time the binding was not an issue. Aside from that, great book, great... more

| 6. Hellboy, Vol. 4: The Right Hand of Doom (v. 4) |
|
By: Mike Mignola By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse February 11, 2004
"Hellboy, Volume 4: The Right Hand of Doom" is another great Hellboy collection, telling a handful of effective tales ranging from the apocalyptic to the hilarious (I'm mainly thinking of the two-page "Pancakes" as an example of the latter). As well as the terrific stories, Mike Mignola's art continues to be a wonder, inexplicably combining in a perfectly successful manner scary realism with a kind... more

| 7. Hellboy, Vol. 3: The Chained Coffin and Others (v. 3) |
|
By: Mike Mignola By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse February 04, 2004
While the previous two "Hellboy" collections ("Seed of Destruction" and "Wake the Devil") were both bang-up entertainment and shouldn't be missed, this third collection is the first to truly fire on all cylinders. The thickest volume to date, "The Chained Coffin and others" features a variety of stand-alone tales of varying lengths, as opposed to the one big story arc that each of the previous volumes... more

| 8. Hellboy, Vol. 7: The Troll Witch and Other Stories (v. 7) |
|
By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse November 28, 2007
"Hellboy, Volume 7: The Troll Witch and Others" features a variety of tales: some short, some long, some new, some previously published, some pretty straight-forward, some open to interpretation... but all fascinating and fun. A new wrinkle this time is the use of guest artists P. Craig Russell and Richard Corben, who each draw a story. Both deliver the quirks and weirdness you expect, and both are... more

|
By: Mike Mignola By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse October 15, 2008
Almost everything is great about this book and the other two published volumes.
My major gripe is that the original covers are in a duotone for some reason instead of the original full color. Also, the image on the front cover of this and the other two books is very easily mangled if you are not careful handling it.
Maybe when they are done with all the volumes there will... more

| 10. Hellboy, Vol. 6 : Strange Places (v. 6) |
|
By: Mike Mignola By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse May 10, 2006
"Hellboy, Volume 6: Strange Places" collects two past Hellboy mini-series: "The Third Wish" and "The Island", and they're both great reads. The former is pretty much a traditional Hellboy story, as Hellboy gets mixed up with some creepy mermaids and the curses eventually placed on them; and the latter is more of an epic history (but still creepy) of the Hellboy world rather than a specific horror... more
