Mike Mignola came up with Hellboy in the early 90s and somehow I'm reading it for the first time in supremely late 2009. "Darkness calls" is a tough book. Here Hellboy engages in a grand fight against "Koshchei the Deathless". The fight takes place in no other than hell. And Koshchei is literally deathless (and we find Hellboy is too). Mignola's mingleling with mythology is facinating. When I bought Hellboy vol. 1, some of the pages started falling out. I thought this might have just been me, but when I went to check the review for it, I noticed a few other people were complaining about faulty glue in the binding.

Almost everything is great about this book and the other two published volumes.
My major gripe is that the original covers are in a duotone for some reason instead of the original full color. Also, the image on the front cover of this and the other two books is very easily mangled if you are not careful handling it.
