Tyrone Power stars in one of the all-time great swashbucklers, and participates in some of the best swordfights ever captured on screen, while trading salvos with the sharp-tongued, 'Technicolor Queen,' Maureen O'Hara. Purists will hate me for saying this, but I wish this film could be colorized. I caught this on TV many years ago and was stunned by how sharp and beautiful the costumes were. If only this pageantry had been captured in color! Other than that, it was gorgeous to look at and Shearer's acting was excellent (especially in the last scenes). I think she overacted in the beginning with the teenage girl... more

Power was the last of an American tradition of handsome leading men who were quite dashing, romantic and versatile. Only Errol Flynn comes close. Flynn, however, ended his career making low-quality films that were quickly forgotten, half-completed or lost. Power stayed at the top from the beginning. Twenty-three years of working with high-quality directors, like Billy Wilder... more

Little did I know that it would become one of my favorite movies of all time!... more
