Directed By: Kihachi Okamoto
March 15, 2005

I liked this movie about a psychotic Samuri who eventually goes mad until, well, he goes mad. Maybe I fell asleep during 5 minutes of the movie too, because there seemed to be a big plot gap towards the end. One minute Ryunosuke is suppose to fight a duel with the brother of a samuri he killed, but the next he is scene in Edo, and no mention is made of the duel. What the heck? The ends with ol'... more

January 10, 2006

Kurosawa's early movies offer a fascinating look into post-WWII Japan. Watch for remaining hints of the US occupation. Marvel at how far Japan has come in just over 50 years. Talk amongst yourselves about whether Toshiro Mifune would be mentioned more often in the same breath with the likes of Cary Grant and Gregory Peck if (1) he hadn't done so many anti-hero roles in period pieces and (2) he'd... more

I have fifty years of fluent Japanese in reading, writing, speaking. The subtitles are without doubt very very very poor. You cannot achieve a sense of the dialogue , and therefore the action, by the miserable subtitles. The
video transfer, impeccable, the subtitles miserable and confusing. Buy only if you are fluent, and turn the subtitle off. Fortunately, I can enjoy this... more

I purchased this trilogy the day after watching a bit of the film on satellite early in the morning.
This trilogy of films are very entertaining. mystery, violence, suspence and very sexy moments!
Hanzo is a modern man in a time of greed and corruption. He does things his way regardless of the reprecussions.
A must see! I wish there were more.

Directed By: Kon Ichikawa
March 13, 2007

Features:
  • An Imperial Japanese Army regiment surrenders to British forces in Burma at the close World War II and finds harmony through song. A corporal, thought to be dead, disguises himself as a Buddhist monk and stumbles upon spiritual enlightenment. Magnificently shot in hushed black and white, Kon Ichikawa's The Burmese Harp is an eloquent meditation on beauty coexisting with death and remains one o
spoilers (kind of)

The film's anti-war message is obvious, but conveyed progressively. There is no sudden transformation. Instead the slow transformation occurs through the main protagonist's (Mizushima) mental struggle on whether he should return to his army comrades and return to his home country or stay behind and allow the spirits of the Japanese soldiers to ascend.

Directed By: Kinji Fukasaku
February 25, 2003

The idea seems to focus on love and the search for love. The Black Rose Mansion seems to be the center of the story, as men come to debate and even fight over the meaning of love. Can love ever be real? Can you ever find love or is it, like the Black Rose that can never turn red, a myth?

Starring: Shintarô Katsu, Tatsuya Nakadai, Reiko Ôhara, Masayuki Mori, Peter
Directed By: Kenji Misumi
April 06, 2004

This 21st episode of the long running Zatoichi series is highly recommended. This is a truly great film! The cinematography and acting is great! Zatoichi [Shintaro Katsu] and many of the character actors in this film did an excellent acting job in their respective roles. In particular, [Masayuki Mori] of "Rashomon" fame. And the twisted and sick-minded Ronin [Tatsuya Nakadai].

Starring: Robert Axelrod, Richard Cansino, George C. Cole, Richard Epcar, Osgood W. Glick
Directed By: Richard Epcar, Soji Yoshikawa
July 29, 2003

This is the 1995 Streamline/Orion dub of the first LUPIN THE THIRD animated film from the late 1970's, which has many titles but here is called MYSTERY OF MAMO. Pioneer would redub it roughly ten years later when they had the LUPIN license as "SECRET OF MAMO" and while that is probably an easier disc to get your hands on, this is the superior dub. The translation is closer and the jokes are less topical... more
