Amazon.com essential video: Things get off to a bumpy start. First, Charlie fails to make anything profound out of the cloud formations above, just a "ducky" and a "horsy." (But that's always been one of his best qualities--he calls them as he sees them.) Then he has a disastrous kite experience, followed by further humiliation on the baseball field (with its dandelion-covered pitching mound). Just when it seems as if things couldn't get much worse--they don't. Charlie finds something he's good at. Lucy, Violet, and the rest of the Peanuts gang doubt that his spelling bee winning streak can possibly last, but Charlie proves them all wrong and makes it to the national championships in New York City. His best pal, Linus, and free-spirited pooch, Snoopy, arrive shortly afterwards and provide their support. Granted, this rare, full-length feature film ends just as it began, with one more small humiliation, but it's Charlie's achievement that leaves the bigger impression. There are even a few lessons to be learned, but the tone is never preachy or condescending. Along the way, there are numerous pleasures to enjoy: Vince Guaraldi's classic Oscar-nominated score (featuring lyrics by Rod McKuen), the brightly hued, clean-lined animation (which occasionally erupts into impressionist and pop art flights of fancy), Schroeder's lovely rendition of Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, Snoopy's ice-skating escapade at Rockefeller Plaza, and Linus's Fred Astaire-inspired dance with his long lost blanket. --Kathleen C. youngatheart I saw this as a child but I had not seen it in years.My sister was telling me that she had purchased this for her daughters so while I was talkng to her long distance, I just simply ordered it from Amazon. The movie was totally ENJOYABLE! the charaters were rich & the story was excellent. These days this movie about Charlie Brown would be considered different because he would be told to have low self-esteem. Not really. He is a person like you and me that haschallenges. The part I like was any scene with Snoopy. He was the BOMB! I also like the bit with Schroder on the piano. Someday soon my next movie will be SNOOPY COME HOME! Again, enjoy!!!!
We love this movie! I have two kids, ages 6 and 4, and we love to watch this movie. I remember it from when I was a kid and wanted to share it with them. I have to say, this is a very slow moving film, but anyone familiar with the christmas special will be familiar with this pace. I think there is a lot of Schultz humor here, there is a lot of angst and name calling, but it wouldn't be Charlie Brown without it. This movie led to discussions about other kids not being nice, and how even when you try your best, you can still come up short. My 6 year old was especially sensitive to how Charlie was feeling throughout the movie. Over all I am very happy to own this.
If you love Snoopy and Charlie Brown............... Please don't hesitate to buy this DVD. This was by far the best DVD movie of the peanuts gang besides the holiday specials. This movie I can watch over and over again. I also enjoy sharing it with friends and family. It brings back great memories of when I was a kid.
I recognize how artistic this movie is... I just saw this movie for the first time in 35 years. My father took me to see it when I was four.
Anyway, it was my first movie in the theatre and for some reason I remembered it. Watching it again with my own three year old was also quite interesting. Only now, I recognize how artistic this movie is. With music by cool jazz artist Vince Guaraldi, lyrics by poet Rod McKuen, and characters invented by Charles Schultz it almost becomes a period piece with somewhat psychodelic/pop art animation influenced by the times.
My experience tells me that children will enjoy this movie on one level, but adults can also appreciate the aesthetics, as well as, the message which, I guess, reveals Charlie Brown as the American anti-hero trying to find meaning in a cruel world of inflated egos and office politics. His alter-ego Snoopy is also quite interesting as a "Walter Mitty" character who lazes around all day, but enjoys a rich inner fantasy life as a World War I fighter pilot/ star hockey player et. al.
Three Cheers for A Boy Named Charlie Brown!!! This DVD was worth every penny for such humorous, family-friendly entertainment. As a thirty-something mom of two little ones, 2 and 4 years, I highly recommend this DVD to other parents of young children. This retro Peanuts film is for anyone who enjoys the ups and downs of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and other quirky Peanuts characters, and the excellent retro-jazz/piano/rock sets, vivid colors, and an added bonus of guaranteed smiles and laughter from the viewers in your home.
