3 out of 5 starsThomas Arrrrrrrrr Griffith
No one will read this review, but I'll review this movie anyway. I watched this movie for two reasons. First of all, I'm a big fan of Thomas Ian Griffith. This guy should have been a bigger action star. He's a better actor than his much more famous peers, VanDamme and Seagal, and has a much better charisma and likeable screen presence. I'll pretty much watch anything he's in. Second, this film has a pirate theme. To me, pirate themes in films are like sleazy white trash women-I could never resist either of them. Well, there isn't much in the realm of pirates here. The cover of the dvd is misleading. It's also got a quote saying something along the lines of, "This film captures the excitement of films like Indiana Jones and Romancing The Stone." No one is credited with this quote, and I wonder if this phantom critic saw the same film I did. While this film isn't terrible by any means, it's nothing to write home about. So much more could have been done with the concept. Here's my short synopsis: Griffith is a modern day pirate(you'd never know if he didn't proudly go around telling people) who gets caught up in a deal to find Montezuma's buried treasure. Some Columbian crime lord and an evil Colonel are out for it as well. So is the evil twin sister of the leading lady. This coulda been cool, but 60+ minutes of the 90 minute running time are gone before we get to this island. Everything before has been your basic direct to video cat and mouse chase plot. Plus we get a confusing last five minutes. After a duel, it's perfectly clear that the villian has actually won the gold in a fair fight, yet in the very next scene, our heroes are talking about their plans to return the gold to Mexico and are in a state of happy celebration. I'm wondering if the director suffers from the same short term memory loss like the guy in Memento. All in all, the movie is so-so, but I kept with it coz Griffith was a joy to watch(as usual) as the wiseguy pirate with a heart of gold. If your booty's burning a hole in your pocket, I'd say go ahead and rent it. But only if you like Thomas Ian Griffith, not if your a fan of pirate movies.
