This is one of my favorite Saturday Morning Serials, and other reviewers have already addressed its pros and cons. This short review is about the restored version issued by Serial Squadron.
This is billed as a one-man restoration (evidently using some sort of Apple software), and it shows. It is better than the other versions I have seen, but it still contains many of the flaws the... more

| | 5. The Vanishing Legion - 12 Chapter Movie Serial |
| Starring: Harry Carey, Boris Karloff, Frankie Darro, Rex the Wonder Horse, Yakima Canutt Directed By: Ford Beebe, B. Reeves Eason February 27, 2007
Mascot made such wonderful serials; surreal, dream-like, yet having an almost documentary feel to them, as though you're right there, mixed into the bizarre goings-on. When the mysterious VOICE is unmasked in the final chapter it just can't be that person because he was present several times in the presence of others when the voice would broadcast over shortwave!!! | | 6. Up in the Air |
| Starring: Frankie Darro, Marjorie Reynolds, Mantan Moreland, Gordon Jones, Lorna Gray Directed By: Howard Bretherton March 18, 2003
Ah, the joys of Frankie Darro and Mantan Moreland. Darro was among Monogram Pictures' biggest drawing cards in 1940, before The East Side Kids became the studio's resident little tough guys. This is a typically fast-moving entertaining movie of the early 1930s. When you have James Cagney in the lead, these "pre-Code" films are even better: just fun stuff to watch.
Usually, when films are "dated," it's a negative but not so with films from 1930-1934. Yeah, with the slang and the attitudes, dress, hairstyles, etc., they are dated but that's a big part of the fun. These films... more
