The Forbidden Dance is the story of Nisa (Laura Herring) a beautiful princess from Brazil who concerned over the destruction of her homeland and the rainforests by a giant multinational corporation travels to Los Angeles to meet with the company's chairman. But her visit is in vain - she is prevented from arranging a meeting. Despondent and discouraged Nisa accepts a job as a maid to make ends meet while she's in America. There she falls in love with Jason (Jeff James) the handsome son of her employer. She teaches him the passionate and erotic dance of her home ... Lambada. Together they decide the only way to deliver the message to the American people is to enter a Lambada dance contest. 5 out of 5 starsSexy....Passionate and Energetic!!
I have watched this movie over and over....since it came out on VHS!! I absolutely love it!! It is sensual....sexy and high energy!! It was very exciting to watch for me. Laura Harring....let me tell you is Hot!! She is some dancer!! I loved her with Jeff james. I loved the Characters and let me tell you that Sid haig as "Joa" was an absolute Hoot!! It made you laugh also!! I never get sick of watching this movie!! To me...it's a Must have!! I enjoyed it as you can see.

3 out of 5 starsThe Real Message Behind the Movie itself...
"SAVE OUR RAINFORESTS" by shaking your assets. LOL!

For the better part of this film. I thought the movie was great at the time, because the woman was SO hot! Today, I personally think, there are other smarter ways to get the message across about saving not only our rainforests, but saving our whole planet and conserving our natural resources or what's left of it.

Peace up y' all!

5 out of 5 starsSinging in the Rainforest
Care for the environment, the ozone hole, illegal immigration, safe sex, drunk driving, a villain from Texas with a drawl..."The Forbidden Dance" is a cheesy movie that's surprisingly relevant. Of course,in the spirit of "Xanadu","The Forbidden Dance" is one of those "so bad it's great" movies, and makes one wonder why it hasn't been adapted for Broadway. Yet. I was laughing within the movie's first five minutes, though it takes itself seriously.

In the opening scene,Amazonian Indians are dancing capoeira (Brazilian martial arts),speaking Spanish, and there's the surprisingly Caucasian princess,Nisa (Laura Harring) with her Ellen Burstyn-like mother. The villain, cowboy hat-wearing Texan Benjamin Maxwell of Petramco, intrudes on the Natives' erotic dancing, telling them he'll take their land. In slow motion,Nisa mourns over a tree after Benjamin drives over it. As in her later movie "Mulholland Drive",Laura Harring has a trippy experience in LA. Nisa meets Jason (Jeff James). They dance the Lambada erotically, yet there's never any chemistry between them. Jason and Nisa face many obstacles to their love. Nisa is unjustly fired from her job as a maid, and ends up dancing the Lambada at the sex club Xtasy, run by the menacing lesbian madam Mickey. Jason has to deal with his evil ex-girlfriend Ashley. Finally, Nisa explains to Jason the plight of the rainforests. Jeff James' acting as Nisa's lover is quite stiff, considering his only previous "acting" experience was in "adult" films. Jason&Nisa overcome obstacles to perform the Lambada on Kid Creole's TV show&tell everyone about the rainforest.

"Forbidden Dance" is laughably ham-handed with its message. The closing credit says "This movie is dedicated to the protection of the rainforest." When Jason&Nisa are about to consummate their relationship, their Hispanic friend slips a condom under the bedroom door. When Jason&Nisa are invited to drink in celebration,Jason refuses because he's driving. The script is amazingly bad...yet the Lambada song is great.

On its recent compilation,"World Hits",Putumayo World Music has Kaoma's "Lambada",a song which is a frequent motif in this movie. Unfortunately,Putumayo fails to mention in its liner notes that Kaoma's "Lambada" inspired not one,but TWO cheesy movies that opened on the same day in 1990. Yes,bad movies can happen to good songs, but they're so bad they're great! Thankfully, there was never "Macarena:The Feature Film."

3 out of 5 starslambada
Unfortunately I can only give this movie 3 stars for the following reasons:

1. Weak Story line.
2. Poor acting by most of the cast.

3. However, for some reason they capture you. The dancing is ok.
4. What really draws me to this movie is the music. Kid Creole and the Coconuts are wonderful and Corey's lead vocal on the title song kicks it up another notch.

4 out of 5 starsWow !
Kinda of a "B" movie but the dancing is something to see, and dream about!
