| 1. Golden Age Doctor Fate Archives Volume 1 (DC Archive Editions) |
|
By: Gardner Fox, Howard Sherman Publisher: DC Comics June 06, 2007
It's great to have the golden age comics available. Some of the early stories are quite good. However, most of the stories here are just plain boring. Why was it so difficult for early writers to understand that it's not fun or interesting to see super-powerful heroes beat the living snot out of typical crooks? I GET IT! HE'S BULLETPROOF! Every story reminds us that Dr. Fate (he is a... more

| 2. Golden Age Sandman Archives, Vol. 1 (DC Archive Editions) |
|
By: Gardner Fox Publisher: DC Comics January 19, 2005
In the Golden Age of comics, things were simpler. The art could be crude, the stories simplistic to say the least. However...one of the heroes of the golden age of comics that stood out head and shoulders above so many others was Adventure Comics gas mask wearing hero...The Sandman. Written by Gardner Fox with art by Bert Christman and Creig Flessel. The Sandman was something a little different... more

| 3. Golden Age Hawkman Archives, Volume 1 (DC Archive Editions) |
|
By: Gardner Fox Publisher: DC Comics February 01, 2006
The Golden Age Hawkman was an "Indiana Jones" with wings. "With weapons of the past he fights evil of the present." The stories by the legendary Gardner Fox are excellent, capturing the sense of wonder that makes the golden age what is was. Fun! Hawkman's adventures span the globe, fighting statues that come to life among ancient ruins in the jungle to taking on modern criminal masterminds. ... more

| 4. All Star Comics - Archives, Volume 0 (Archive Editions) |
|
By: Gardner Fox Publisher: DC Comics March 15, 2006
I was worried about this one because I had read several reviews of later D.C. archive editions like 'starman vol 2" in which they just scanned old comics. All the other archive editions featured clean art and remastering or recoloring etc. This one is well done and features superclean reproductions of the first two issues of All Star Comics. They are pre war and filled with short tales about the golden... more

By: Various Publisher: DC Comics October 24, 2007
That's a line spoken by one of the thugs that bind Wildcat in chains and toss him in the bay during one of his adventures. Ah the Golden Age, villains and heroes seemed to enjoy their work more back then. Maybe that's one reason why I like Golden Age comics, even the more serious ones usually have a sense of fun.
Anyway, the seven heroes featured in this volume, Johnny Thunder,a naive... more

| 7. Supermen!: The First Wave Of Comic Book Heroes 1936-1941 |
|
By: Greg Sadowski Publisher: Fantagraphics Books February 15, 2009
There's alot of great stuff here and it's all in color. The main thing that I can't handle about alot of non marvel and d.c. reprints is that they won't reprint them in color. They are out there in various forms but here we get them in color and they don't look bad either. You get great artists like Lou Fine, Jack Kirby, Bill Everet, Hank Fletcher and others too in some early superhero tales. This... more

| 9. Popeye Volume 4 |
|
By: E.C. Segar Publisher: Fantagraphics Books August 29, 2009
This fourth volume of Fantagraphics' series of E.C. Segar's Popeye comic strips is subtitled "Plunder Island". That is also the title of a long adventure that ran in the Popeye color Sunday strips (it ran for over six months). This is arguably one of the best sequences in the history of the strip, and it introduced Alice the Goon. Other than that classic strip, all the other material is great, too... more

By: Bill Finger Publisher: DC Comics May 01, 1999
When I first started reading comic books, my only exposure to super-heros up to that point had been through other media, specifically the cartoon "The Super Friends". Imagine my surprise to learn that there was more than ONE of nearly every Super Friend in the comic books. Adding to my confusion was the fact that these counterparts lived on a parallel Earth, and that some, like Superman and Batman... more
