| 1. New X-Men, Vol. 3 |
|
By: Grant Morrison Publisher: Marvel Comics December 10, 2008
Volume 3 is some of the worst work I've ever seen by Morrison. While Vols 1 and 2 (and the first arc of Vol 3) maintain some of the subversive intensity Morrison brinks to books like the Invisibles, the writing goes downhill fast. Campy and facile, I actually went back to make absolutely sure Morrison was the author. Sadly, yes. While I would recommend Vols 1 and 2 without reservation, Vol 3 is... more

By: Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely Publisher: Marvel Comics June 11, 2008
Grant Morrison is one of those polarizing writers. You either kneel at the altar or kneel at the toilet bowl. Me, i dont really get all the hype but i have enjoyed some of his work. Although it is a far departure from what I had been used to New X-Men is not that bad (my favorite X- period being from Mutant Massacre through Inferno. Fall of the Mutants being the peak). Its not a masterpiece as some... more

| 3. Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 2 (v. 2) |
|
By: Joss Whedon Publisher: Marvel Comics December 31, 2008
John Cassaday is the star here. His art is ridiculously good here. Whedon's script is good but the villain reveal is dissappointing because JOe Kelly & Steven Seagle did before, just not as good. Overall, still a good read!... more

|
By: Joss Whedon Publisher: Marvel Comics July 16, 2008
This book is great. I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. Joss Whedon is a great storyteller and really gets the characters. Also, did not see the plot twist coming at the end. Hopefully that's not the end of the character. The artist is really great too and I can only think of maybe 2 others that would've brought equal success to the book in terms of artistry, but no matter... more

| 5. New X-Men Vol. 1: E is for Extinction (v. 1) |
|
By: Grant Morrison Publisher: Marvel Comics December 01, 2002
The story is a little under mediocre, but--GAAAAH! The artwork! Why does everyone look like a mix between a potato and a garbage pail kid? Who really thinks that its easy to read a story as complicated as X-men can be when all the characters look like poorly painted, over-inflated parade balloons with constipation?... more

By: Ed Brubaker, Mike Carey, Craig Kyle, Chris Yost, Peter David Publisher: Marvel Comics November 26, 2008
While I read a lot of Marvel titles, I haven't kept up as well as I apparently need to in order to know all the characters in this crossover.
Some positives:
Even though this section is much smaller than my complaints below, I want to be clear that I enjoyed the storyline. The overall plot was well thought out, and I enjoyed reading the Summit notes at the end of the trade... more

|
By: Brian Michael Bendis Publisher: Marvel Comics January 20, 2010
This is an amazing story arc that is extremely well-written and Bendis does not take any cheap shortcuts to resolve the storyline. It's as realistic an approach to superhero writing as you are likley to find in the medium... more

By: Joss Whedon Publisher: Marvel Comics February 28, 2007
I was all on aboard for the first two trades from Whedon & Cassaday. Here however, I was taken aback by inclusion of confusion, runarounds, and conflicting ideas. It was all over the place. The only thing keeping the from being rated lower was Cassaday's art. A step back... more

| 10. New X-Men Vol. 4: Riot at Xavier's |
|
By: Grant Morrison Publisher: Marvel Comics July 01, 2003
Art is at its best and storywise one of the best in the Morrison era. Actually in this volume starts the good stuff plot wise that will lead to the next also amazing volumes. The class of specials is my favourite subplot, these guyz are so cool! Although this is the most "to the ground" story it is my favourite. Morrison plays with the standardised themes in the X-Men that made the series so boring... more
