| 1. Fantastic Four Visionaries - John Byrne, Vol. 7 (v. 7) |
|
By: John Byrne, Roger Stern By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics July 11, 2007
3-1/2 stars. I consider volumes 3, 6 & 7 in this series to be about average to slightly above average in quality. This is the Return of Phoenix/ birth of X-Factor paperback; it's the thinnest edition in this series, yet issue 286 is really good. There are only six issues here, but four are bigger than average, with between 30-42 pages each.
It's content is split evenly, with the Phoenix... more

By: John Byrne, Ron Wilson, Al Milgrom By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics October 18, 2006
3-1/2 stars. I consider volumes 3, 6 & 7 in this series to be about average to slightly above average in quality. In volume 6, Jerry Ordway takes over on inks to lighten Byrne's FF/ Alpha Flight workload. Really, I'm a *huge* Byrne fan, but this Byrne-Ordway team-up just didn't really work for me. They're both well-respected professionals; I just didn't think they were a great artistic match. The... more

By: John Byrne, Roger Stern, Jerry Ordway Publisher: Marvel Comics February 18, 2009
3-1/2 stars. I consider volumes 0, 3, 6 & 7 in this series to be about average to slightly above average in quality. Byrne actually did a number of issues starring the FF in various titles in the '70s before starting his long & celebrated run in the '80s. We see this early work here.
I'm not usually a fan of '70s-style art, and some of this was done in 1980, but it's interesting... more

By: John Byrne By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics December 28, 2005
John Byrne breathes new life into the Fantastic Four by replacing Thing with She-Hulk. With great, highly classic stories in the previous paperback, it's time to take the team in new directions.
We begin with a story called "Masque of Doom", which proves that even though Dr. Doom has been killed like 86 times in Marvel comics (I'm exaggerating slightly), he never really, truly stays dead... more

By: John Byrne By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics March 23, 2005
Since volumes 4 & 2 currently share the same reviews listing, I'll be giving two separate reviews here:
5 stars... Volume 4: Best of Byrne's team with Thing This is it- the very best of Byrne's Fantastic Four with fan-favorite Thing on the team. In volumes 5-8, She-Hulk has taken his place. And in the 1st three volumes Byrne was just starting to get really good. Here he's firing... more

By: John Byrne By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics January 26, 2005
Being a comic book fan from waaaaaaay back I remember being very excited that John Byrne was going to take over the F.F. "franchise". I'm glad to see that the stories have been collected into the trade paperback format. I recomened to all F.F. and John Byrne fans to pick up this volume and put it down easily. It's not something that can be done. These stories take me back to a time when life was much... more

| 7. Fantastic Four Visionaries - John Byrne, Vol. 2 |

By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics July 01, 2004
The best installment of John Byrne's mammoth run on this F.F. title. The Galactus storyline is the highlight in this volume: EVERYONE against the World Eater.
I have the originals, but the paper and color quality of these reprints are outstanding. This volume is worth every penny... ... more

By: John Byrne By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics June 18, 2008
I originally picked upthe back issues of Incredible Hulk #314-320 back when I was a teenager (87) I cherished these books immensely and read them over and over. John Byrne's art is impeccable, truly beautiful art work and he is also quite the writer. His runs on Uncanny X-men, Fantastic Four and his Man of Steel mini series are must reads for any self respecting comic book fan. This story picks up... more

By: Peter David, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Jeff Purves Publisher: Marvel Comics October 19, 2005
While technically the majority of the comics reprinted in this volume had been collected before in the "Ground Zero" TPB over a decade earlier, long-time fans will notice that pages that had been accidentally swapped in one issue and left out in another have been restored in this edition. PAD and Todd McFarlane's break-out issue begins here with HULK #340, a bloody battle between Marvel's most... more

|
By: Walter Simonson Publisher: Marvel Comics May 30, 2007
This long overdue collection puts together FF #334-341 written and drawn by Walt Simonson. Although Simonson's art isn't featured until issue #337, he does a nice job of integrating the "Acts of Vengeance" storyline into the FF universe. From there, it's a cosmic adventure into the future where the FF must stop Galactus, who has gone above and beyond past showings to actually devouring the universe!... more
