| 1. Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 4: Unstoppable |
|
By: Joss Whedon Publisher: Marvel Comics July 16, 2008
This book is great. I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. Joss Whedon is a great storyteller and really gets the characters. Also, did not see the plot twist coming at the end. Hopefully that's not the end of the character. The artist is really great too and I can only think of maybe 2 others that would've brought equal success to the book in terms of artistry, but no matter... more

| 2. Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 2 (v. 2) |
|
By: Joss Whedon Publisher: Marvel Comics December 31, 2008
John Cassaday is the star here. His art is ridiculously good here. Whedon's script is good but the villain reveal is dissappointing because JOe Kelly & Steven Seagle did before, just not as good. Overall, still a good read!... more

| 3. Astonishing X-Men Vol. 1: Gifted |
|
By: Joss Whedon, John Cassaday Publisher: Marvel Comics December 29, 2004
Joss Whedon does what Grant Morrison never did, and that is understand the X-Men. Beautiful art by Joohn Cassaday makes this book almost excellent. New villians are shown here and are interesting and uncomplicated without being simple. Really fantastic stuff that whets your appetite for the rest of their run... more

| 4. Astonishing X-Men Vol. 5: Ghost Box |
|
By: Warren Ellis Publisher: Marvel Comics December 23, 2009
I read the Astonishing X-Men run with much interest. Until now it had good ideas, darn impressive artwork and excellent writing, so if you're a fan of Whedon & Cassaday, you'll be slightly disappointed by this volume.
Ghost Box has an interesting concept behind it (spoiler: parallel universes) and throws in some interesting details about how the X-Men work, like telepathically learning... more

| 6. New X-Men, Vol. 1 |
|
By: Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely Publisher: Marvel Comics June 11, 2008
Grant Morrison is one of those polarizing writers. You either kneel at the altar or kneel at the toilet bowl. Me, i dont really get all the hype but i have enjoyed some of his work. Although it is a far departure from what I had been used to New X-Men is not that bad (my favorite X- period being from Mutant Massacre through Inferno. Fall of the Mutants being the peak). Its not a masterpiece as some... more

| 8. X-Force, Vol. 2: Old Ghosts |
|
By: Christopher Yost, Craig Kyle Publisher: Marvel Comics September 23, 2009
I'm an X-Men fan from the 90s and I heard this book would be perfect for me. Wow, that couldn't be more wrong. There was little to no exposition so I was lost for huge chunks of the book. New readers, like myself, even though I do have some knowledge of the charcaters involved, are in for some head scratching. The art is too dark and makes it hard to determine exactly who and what is in each panel... more

| 9. X-Force Vol. 1: Angels and Demons |
|
By: Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost Publisher: Marvel Comics February 11, 2009
I enjoyed this book but not as much as I thought I would. It's a good quick read and sort of sets up the rest of the series. The art is not as bad as I feared but I'm not convinced by the plot going forward. Bringing back a bunch of dead villains is a bogey enough concept in my mind. I would've preferred to see newer & more dangerous villains but instead we get the old one's dragged out again... more

| 10. Uncanny X-Men: Divided We Stand |
|
By: Ed Brubaker, Michael Choi Publisher: Marvel Comics October 22, 2008
This trade paperback collects issues #495-499 of Uncanny X-Men published by Marvel Comics in 2008. Ed Brubaker, perhaps the best writer in modern comics, wrote all five issues. Mike Choi was the artist for the first four issues and Sonia Oback for the fifth. The post-Messiah CompleX story shows two groups of X-Men: Cyclops and Emma Frost on vacation and later searching for Angel in San Francisco... more
