| 2. The Best American Sports Writing 2007 |
|
From: Mariner Books Publisher: Mariner Books October 10, 2007
Most of the books in this series have been excellent. This is the rare exception. I want to read what the title promises -- the best of the previous year's writing. This completely fails to deliver, in what I suspect was an attempt by this editor (who hopefully won't be asked to play this role again) to assemble what amounts to a sideshow of sports largely ignored by the public -- for good reason... more

| 3. The Best American Sports Writing of the Century |
|
From: Mariner Books Publisher: Mariner Books June 16, 1999
Some amazing pieces on great athletes and sporting moments over the last 100 years. Some Enlightening (Ali, DiMaggio) Some Heartwarming (Secratariat) and even some Zany (Thompson on the Derby). Being a young man, I missed most of these great people/moments in history - but the tales live on and are captured through excellent writing. Highly recommend!... more

| 4. The Best American Sports Writing 2006 (The Best American Series) |
|
From: Mariner Books Publisher: Mariner Books October 11, 2006
I've enjoyed reading this series for a decade, and this book was right up there with the best of them. This book can either be read quickly like a pleasant novel, or it can be read in pieces; I usually save it for a business trip, when I have breaks to read for just 10-20 minutes at a time. It's hard to pick a favorite, though the boxing girl and the cave-diver pieces are especially memorable. I also... more

| 6. Shoeless Joe |
|
By: W. P. Kinsella Publisher: Mariner Books April 28, 1999
Shoeless Joe is a sports story unlike any other. Rather than focusing on baseball, it focuses on a character (who's name is strangely similar to the narrator's. Conincidence?) chasing after his dreams, which began in his cornfield when he heard a voice whispering that line everyone is now familiar with, "If you build it he will come." These dreams he has throughout the book seem very bizarre, but he... more

| 7. Everything They Had: Sports Writing from David Halberstam |
|
By: David Halberstam Publisher: Hyperion May 12, 2009
In a number of these essays, Halberstam shows us why he was the best chronicler of our times of the intersection of sports and society, and all the different angles that complex and convoluted connection had.
He reminisces about sports and adolescence, takes several looks at triad of race/sports/society, gives his take on lesser as well as "major" sports and more.
It's also... more

| 8. The Best American Essays 2008 |
|
From: Mariner Books Publisher: Mariner Books October 08, 2008
Before we begin deconstructing this particular instalment in the Best American Essays series, we should first begin by setting our parameters and defining our terms. Specifically, what constitutes an essay. With this Houghton Mifflin series being so clearly defined as to offer eight other genres for correct placement, there should be no need for misplacement and no tolerance should it occur. ... more
