| 1. The Amazing Screw-on Head |
|
Starring: Paul Giamatti, David Hyde Pierce, Patton Oswalt, Corey Burton, Mindy Sterling Directed By: Chris Prynoski February 06, 2007
Based on the one-shot comic of the same name by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, "The Amazing Screw-on Head" is an absolute masterpiece of droll, offbeat humor and, stylish low-rent animation. It was created as a pilot for a possible series on the Sci-Fi channel, and it's one of cult entertainment's greatest travesties that it was not picked up. It was, however awesome enough to warrant a full DVD release... more

| 2. Zombieworld: Champion Of The Worms |
|
By: Mike Mignola, Pat McEown Publisher: Dark Horse November 30, 2005
Only Mike Mignola could fit so many awesome things into a single, 72-page graphic novel. Lost civilizations, necromancy, magic, mummies, paranormal investigators, monsters, and giant worm-like death gods. Wow. It reads like a combination of the Cthulhu mythos, Conan the Barbarian, and a George Romero movie. Certainly a must-read for Mignola/Hellboy fans. The only flaw is the somewhat comical depiction... more

|
By: Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, Guy Davis Publisher: Dark Horse October 28, 2009
Ok first off I just read this last night so I don't know how reflective this review will be but - WOW!
I was a bit let down by the previous stories in The Warning because I found it to confusing and not really going anywhere. It felt like a set up and there were meaningless character interactions which drew me away from the plot like the budding romance between Kate and the German... more

By: Howard Chaykin, Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse April 04, 2007
... and "a Picture is Worth a Thousand Words" are common axioms and they aptly apply to common writers.
Fritz Leiber, however, is an uncommon writer - a veritable artist of semantics - whose eloquence of soliiquy transcends the pedestrian cartoons that so feebly fail to get hardly anything (w)right about these two superlative antiheroes.
I know that in our increasingly illiterate... more

| 5. B.P.R.D. Volume 10: The Warning (B.P.R.D. (Graphic Novels)) |
|
By: Mike Mignola, John Arcudi Publisher: Dark Horse Comics May 01, 2009
I wanted to give this 3 1/2 stars but of course that is impossible. I love the BPRD series and from number 3 onwards it has been fantastic and in a way that is why I am giving this a fairly low rating. The Killing Ground was a great episode and this one after it is a bit of a let down compared to that. The art by Guy Davis is still awesome but the story was a muddle and I couldn't quite get my head... more

By: Mike Mignola, Jason Shawn Alexander Publisher: Dark Horse February 03, 2010
For anyone who likes the Hellboy or BPRD series, this is a must read. Abe Sapien is one of my favourite characters in the series. So, of course, I had to add this to my collection!!!... more

| 7. Lobster Johnson Volume 1: Iron Prometheus (v. 1) |
|
By: Mike Mignola, Jason Armstrong, Dave Stewart Publisher: Dark Horse June 25, 2008
Lobster Johnson, spectre and lead on a number of Hellboy "spook stories," is not simply a myth like the department told us. Just like we saw in the Con. Worm, the claw is out there and the claw is hungry for vengence. The claw existed in another era, however, and that era was one that did not have all the things we have grown accustomed to. In some ways it even reminded me of an old pulp-style Batman... more

|
By: Joshua Dysart, Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse November 12, 2008
I normally avoid BPRD releases because they scare me. Having people tinker with the makings of the Mignola universe is, in a word, unpredictable. sometimes you have a great story and sometimes you don't, and other times you have little bits and pieces missing that are just too much to ignore. In 1946 I found myself happily entertained, however, because this had so many of the things that older Hellboy... more

| 9. B.P.R.D., Vol. 1: Hollow Earth & Other Stories (Hellboy) |
|
By: Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse August 04, 2004
Hollow Earth is a wonderful story. First of all the characters are so alive. Complex emotions. I keep coming back to scenes and not get bored. Even tough, it lacks the charismatic character of Hellboy is not there. Abraham is an reluctant leader and the enigmatic Roger and the awkward and puzzling Johannes, makes up for the Hellboy's power play. I was introduced to BPRD from Hellboy movie so, was a... more

| 10. Hellboy, Vol. 8: Darkness Calls |
|
By: Mike Mignola, Duncan Fegredo, Dave Stewart Publisher: Dark Horse Comics June 09, 2008
"Darkness calls" is a tough book. Here Hellboy engages in a grand fight against "Koshchei the Deathless". The fight takes place in no other than hell. And Koshchei is literally deathless (and we find Hellboy is too). Mignola's mingleling with mythology is facinating. Fegredo's artwork and Stewart's coloring are superb (if you like style you will like this)h. All the characters have supernatural motives... more
