Amazon.com essential video: Before making Batman, director Tim Burton and star Michael Keaton teamed up for this popular black comedy about a young couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) whose premature death leads them to a series of wildly bizarre afterlife exploits. As ghosts in their own New England home, they're faced with the challenge of scaring off the pretentious new owners (Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones), whose daughter (Winona Ryder) has an affinity for all things morbid. Keaton plays the mischievous Beetlejuice, a freelance "bio-exorcist" who's got an evil agenda behind his plot to help the young undead newlyweds. The film is a perfect vehicle for Burton's visual style and twisted imagination, with clever ideas and gags packed into every scene. Beetlejuice is also a showcase for Keaton, who tackles his title role with maniacal relish and a dark edge of menace. --Jeff Shannon
If you don't let me gut out this house and make it my own, I will go insane and I will take you with me... Beetlejuice is one of those flicks that I think I've seen at least 50 times over the years and I never get tired of it. This is one of those film projects where practically every aspect of film making just came together to produce something that for my money is just about as close to perfect as you can get. It's funny and light while also being fairly dark and morbid. It has a wonderful mix of special effects, from practical and optical to animation (mostly stop motion), most of which haven't dated at all, and still look better than 98% of the CGI out there. It's perfectly cast, featuring some of my favorite performances from actors like Alec Baldwin, Gena Davis, and Catherine O'Hara, not to mention Michael Keaton's turn as the titular character (who has enough amazing scenes that he steals the film while only being in it about 20% of it.) Most of all it's one of Tim Burton's most solid efforts that captures both his vision and style without seeming like a "Burton" film (like say how the Corpse Bride, Sleepy Hollow, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory all seem to be a Burton film first and foremost.) Everything in the film feels like it's part of the Beetlejuice universe more than the Burton universe.
Though there isn't much in terms of special features on this disc, it does contain a couple episodes of the Beetlejuice cartoon for the first time on DVD.
Forgot how funny this was. Being a child of the 70"s / 80"s I am now collecting movies from that era. I forgot how funny Beetlejuice is. Great movie!

kinda let down This is an ok buy. I was really hoping there would have been some interviews with Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, and Geena Davis. Deleted / Extended scenes have to be out there somewhere! ...but the picture and sound are great!
A Great Movie I can't comment on the controversy here regarding certain parts being cut out of this new release. All I can say is that this is a great movie, completely entertaining and genius on many levels. It's also something your whole family can enjoy generation after generation. If you've never seen this, or haven't seen it in a while, check it out. It will put a smile on your face.
