Product Description: A revealing look into the construction of the Titanic, one of the most famous ships in history. This unique program was filmed at the Belfast shipyard, the birthplace of the great luxury liner. Includes many historic photographs of the Titanic, as well as rare interviews of eyewitnesses of the construction and launch of the ill-fated liner.
The sinking of the Titanic was one of the worst maritime disasters in history. The liner was on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City when it struck an iceberg about 95 miles south of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland just before midnight on April 14, 1912. Of the more than 2,220 persons aboard, about 1,513 died, including the American millionaires John Jacob Astor, Benjamin Guggenheim, and Isidor Straus.
The ship had been proclaimed unsinkable because of its 16 watertight compartments, but the iceberg punctured five of them, one more than had been considered possible in any accident, and the Titanic sank in less than three hours. Subsequent investigations found that the ship had been steaming too fast in dangerous waters, that lifeboat space had been provided for only about half of the passengers and crew, and that the Californian, close to the scene, had not come to the rescue because its radio operator was off duty and asleep.
This informative program provides unique insights into the construction of the Titanic, as well as many other facts of historical significance.
TITANIC: BORN IN BELFAST (DVD) I was very disappointed with this DVD. It was not worth the price. It was amateurish in the extreme and had too much footage of married couples and other "padding" nothing to do with the Titanic.
