? I've read outstanding reviews for these games from every outlet, but, upon trying them myself, these are awful games.
Although these games "pioneered" the stealth/action video game genre, truth be told, I enjoyed the entire Splinter Cell (Ubisoft) series of games far more than these Metal Gear games.
This series of games just wasn't for me. I did not enjoy them at all.
Doesn't get better than this... MGS: The Essential Collection is a must have for anyone who has played any MGS game, loved it, and wishes to reclaim the nostalgic joy of experiencing these classics again. I had owned MGS 1 and MGS 2 a long time ago and had traded them in for newer games. I was young and dumb. Thankfully, this collection comes out and I have been able to redeem my past ignorance. It is really hard to not recommend this product. The franchise is one of the best in ENTERTAINMENT history across any form of media. The value you get for it's ridiculously low price is unfathomable. Do yourself a favor and pick this up the moment the opportunity presents itself. There is no telling how hard it will become to find this product OR be able to get it for this price as the years pass by.
MGS The Essential Collection This is an awesome buy for anyone who doesn't already own these games and is a fan of the Metal Gear series. Three brilliant games for a great price.
There are however a few things you should know before you buy this. To be able to save in Metal Gear Solid (the Playstation one game), you need a PSone memory card. The other 2 games are PS2 games so no problems there. Also for Metal Gear Solid 3, it is the Subsistence version, but only the first disc. The second disk with the extras is not in this package.
But besides that this is a must buy if you still have a PS2 and want to get into these games. [...]
Definitely an Essential Collection First off i would like to say i absolutely loved all three of the games included in this package, they were a lot of fun and are very much replayable games. That said i have a few qualms with it.
1. I, personally played all of the games on my 80gb ps3 that has backward-compatibility. The only complaint / warning to other buyers is that occasionally during MGS3:Subsistence, the game will slow down significantly, making it seem like you're playing in slow motion, however this only happens on three occasions that come to mind. The worst point of it is when battling The Fury boss, when the lag was so intense it took awhile to beat him. However this problem is easily resolved if you are playing on the ps2 where there are no issues whatsoever.
2. The games are loooooong. The first game is not immensely long, its just that the cutscenes are very long and in depth for the story and people who are impatient may get annoyed at them. I, myself loved them and this is just a warning to those who may consider a purchase.
3. If you have only played MGS4 on ps3 and are used to using those controls, they are almost completely different on these games. MGS4 was a lot more organized in my opinion and worked better than these games, but they still are easy to master if you play enough and practice.
PS3 Compatibility: Just to let the ps3 owners know, if your ps3 is backward compatible you will have no issues playing the ps1 game (i wasnt sure if it would play correctly in my ps3). Also when fighting psycho mantis, just pause the game and press the PS button and then go to controller settings, and change the controller slot from there - took me a while to figure out how i could change slots w/out a 2nd controller.
Other than those nitpicks i thoroughly enjoyed the games and if anyone has not experienced them and wants to get a good deal for all three games, i HIGHLY suggest getting this since it is well worth the money.
All Three Games I have a PS2. The first game is for the Play Station (1). I have not played it yet, but I was told if I use the PS1 memory card, I can save as I play. I just finished GMS2 and I liked it. The character "Jack" is whiny. Be aware, there is a lot of no play character interactions, and when saving you have to listen to his girlfriend ramble on (It was not info that could be used in the game). GMS3 seems like a prequal to 2. ODD. But that is ok. Great games. I will have to get a PS3 so I can play GMS4.
