Product Description:
Kurt Cobain loved to confound his fans' expectations during his brief stint in the spotlight. So when Nirvana gathered in New York City on November 18 1993 he had another trick up his sleeve--an acoustic performance of the raw ferocious grunge songs that propelled the band to stardom. The results were startling and for many viewers a hidden depth to Cobain's songwriting talents were revealed as gentle renditions of NEVERMIND staples such as "On a Plain" and "Come As You Are" were stripped down and performed for a specially invited audience. Among the many highlights is the performance of "Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam" which was originally by Scottish indie-pop group (and longstanding favorite of Cobain's) the Vaselines; a stunning opening in the form of the BLEACH-era track "About a Girl"; and a selection of songs originally performed by underground rock act the Meat Puppets. This release includes the entire performance and is supplemented by some rehearsal footage for the sessions and a couple of tracks that weren't originally broadcast by MTV.Format: DVD AUDIO Genre: MUSIC DVD/LIVE PERFORMANCES UPC: 602517506305 Manufacturer No: B0010263-09

5 out of 5 starsAlmost Epic
The show is stunning. Specially if you forgot about it and you haven't watched it years. Some stuff you'll notice and love are: of course the uncut broadcast, there's also differnet camara angles for a lot of shots and views that are new to everybody that is used to MTV original broadcast. The new audio mastering sounds just incredible.
Bonus features include practice sessions for a bunch of songs. All of them are intersting to watch because you can see band members fool around (specially Dave and Pat Smear.)
There is also an interivew bonus section, nothing out of this world.

Since the audio was not edited for this DVD, you can hear Kurt messing up the lyrics of the song Lake of Fire.
I was used to the original broadcast and so, I never got to taste what raw power was behind the show. This was released just in time to make me remeber how much I love this band and how cool is to see any uncut performance, specially if it has this incredible energy and honesty.
All in all, this is must have for any Nirvana fan and a nice gift to the rest of the world.

5 out of 5 starsA Must Have for any Nirvana fan!!!
I saw this original performance on MTV's Unplugged and immediately became a Nirvana fan. A great upclose and personnal accustic musical performance with Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. Truly shows the very gifted talent of Cobain but a sobering reminder of a great loss for music.

5 out of 5 starsAbsolutely great!
I knew this would be good but didn't realize that they would be doing cover songs which I thought was nice. I assumed they would just be doing accoustic versions of their songs. Kurt Cobain was too cute for words, you could see that he was a little nervous but what a great show. Well worth the money to own a piece of history.

5 out of 5 starsThe Best Unplugged Video of All, Better even than Dylan's
This release by Nirvana was an excellent showcase of the mellower and versatile side of the band. While it contains all their best songs, they are performed in a much different vein. All the sound guitars are taken out and the album is acoustic with even violin added to the mix. The songs that are noticeably different from the original releases are "Come As Yo Are", "Pennyroyal Tea" and "All Apologies", while some of the other mellower hits aren't that much different.

There are six cover songs on the album, including David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World" and The Vaselines' "Jesus Does Not Want Me As A Sunbeam". Then The Meat Puppets' Kurt and Lyle Kirkwood perform with Nirvana on three Meat Puppets' songs, "Lake of Fire", "Plateua", and "Oh Me" having fans go out and buy Meat Puppets II album. I especially enjoyed their cover of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" due to Kurt Cobain's much felt emotion with the vocals. They have a raw vibrancy that you can't help but love. This is for sure the best Unplugged video of all, better even than Bob Dylan's and that's really saying something!

5 out of 5 starsMy favorite Nirvana experience just got better
I know that Nevermind's the one that gets all the glory, but this has always been my favorite Nirvana release. The group's work is just as good in electric mode as it is in acoustic format, and sometimes even better - as much as I love "Come As You Are", "About a Girl" and "On a Plain" in their studio versions, I think they even get better in an acoustic setting. Plus where else are you gonna find treasures like the Meat Puppets set (those Kirkwood brothers can PLAY!), the totally screwed-up version of "Pennyroyal Tea", where he totally flubs the lyrics, their brilliant covers of "The Man Who Sold the World" (which I think is better than Bowie's original), the Vaselines' "Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam", with a great accordion (NOT an oxymoron, by the way), and one of my favorite Nirvana tunes, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", which has some CREEPY screaming at the end. Not to mention that version of "All Apologies"... even redundant, already acoustic tunes like "Dumb", "Polly", and "Something in the Way" are still amazing.
Of course, you can get all that on the CD, but here's some reason to buy the DVD. For one, the between-song banter is expanded upon, and unlike the usual between-song banter (which usually consists of the whole "Are you ready to ROCK? I can't hear you, over all the ROCK! Show me your SOUL, San Fransisco!"), is really funny. I especially like the little jokes they make at Lynyrd Skynyrd's expense when the Meat Puppet guys come on (nothing against Skynyrd, I just find that mumbled joke run-through of "Sweet Home Alabama" funny, and the puns about "Free Bird" funnier). Plus the set - the candles and flowers - looks cool. And it's funny to hear the ridiculous songs people shout for near the coda.
This review wasn't very coherent, I know, but hey. I love this stuff so much, I can't even talk about it without turning into a rambling fanboy. Just buy it. If you like the band, you won't be disappointed.
