Album Description:
The young, idealistic Christopher McCandless, played by Emile Hirsch abandons all possessions and life as most of us known it for the Alaskan wilderness. This incredible and intense true story has touched a nerve with millions around the world.

Amazon.com:
Taking a break from his day job fronting rock heavyweight Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder immerses himself into the big-screen story of a young man who gives all his money to charity and hitchhikes to a new life--and his eventual death--in the wilds of Alaska. Prompted by the film's creator, Sean Penn, to contribute to the musical score, the Seattle musician tackled the entire project, playing every instrument on the soundtrack's nine original and two cover songs. Vedder contemplates the traveler "setting forth in the universe" in the opener "Setting Forth," then tracks in the remaining songs the realizations and disillusionments that follow. A wish comes true in banjo-plucked "No Ceiling" to "up and disappear," while affluence is questioned on the hard-rocking "Far Behind," with Vedder singing, "Empty pockets will/Allow a greater sense of wealth." No song in the album's first half exceeds two-and-a-half minutes, remedied by Vedder's pertinent five-minute stamp on the remake of Indio's "Hard Sun," complete with eerie backing vocals by Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker. The songwriter puts wealth on the hot seat in "Society," questioning, "If less is more/How you keepin' score?" The darkly sung folk song bookends the reticent declaration "Guaranteed," wonderfully delivered and quietly strummed, in which the prodigal Vedder wraps the journey in one line: "Leave it to me as I find a way to be/Consider me a satellite forever orbiting." (The record is packaged like a hardcover book, with vivid photography and lyrics.) --Scott Holter

Great movie and soundtrack. Beautiful scenery to go along with the eerily smooth and hynotic voice of Eddie Vedder! Acoustics spin you in!

1 out of 5 starsThis is a Bias Review
Dear Sean Penn,
I know that this movie is set in the time of grunge's uprising of muddy guitar tones and lyrics crafted of the Fathers of the North Western Baritone Teenaged Angst, but really? Eddie Vedder? There was more around that you could have chosen, maybe someone who evolved from their flanneled past. There has been a near twenty year span since then. Look how far you have come from lovable teen to what you have become now.

Spicoli, this was a great film, but there was so much more that you could have made better, if you would have taken a little more time. Emile Hirsch should not have played McCandless, to whom he brought a body, but no justice in his portrayal. He acts too naive and looks too green to portray a tramp of the road for over two years. Maybe you should have thought about that, I Am Sam. I have no suggestion for you, and am terribly sorry that I dont, however. But dont get me wrong, I did enjoy your movie. I just thought you could have made it better.

Sir, on your next film in which you are behind the camera, please investigate in a little more musical taste than that of the diluted, choking voice of a 43 man who's career derives off of rock and roll's distasteful past.

Sincerely,
MrFisette

This CD is amazing...the movie is awesome, it is an amazing story and the soundtrack really captures the essence of the story. Having listened to the CD so many times, now I want to see the movie again to see where the songs fit in. While the music can certainly stand on it's own, seeing the movie really increases its relevance. Totally recommend....hands down.

Sometimes you can forget what is important and what is the truth. Work, careers, money, conflict, relationships even the godamn weather. For those of you who manage to still grasp a few straws of reality and remember that there is an untamed natural world out there waiting to be challenged, this album may as well be "that" voice in the back of your mind.

I always thought Ed the Ved untapped his magic long ago, and was still capable of marching on with moments of pure genius -- that said this record is outstandingly good on its own merit, regardless of its minimalist approach and length. Ed has p e r f e c t l y narrated the 'Into the Wild' film with this folk-rock bittersweet reflection on what Christopher McCandless might have been thinking.

Definitely one of the finest albums of the millenium.
