Amazon.com: If any artist deserved a hagiography it was Jimi Hendrix, and Joe Boyd's 1973 "authorized" tribute adequately sanctifies the legend. Perversely for a documentary, it achieves this simply through well-chosen concert footage rather than through the insights of the various talking heads. Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and Germaine Greer are all wheeled out to wax lyrical about their days with Jimi, but nothing is more eloquent than watching and listening to him play. From "Hey Joe" in grainy black and white on the Ready Steady Go TV show, classic footage of Monterey, Woodstock (yes, "The Star-Spangled Banner"), and the Isle of Wight festivals to an acoustic 12- string rendition of "Hear My Train a' Comin'," Hendrix the musician speaks for himself.
But if Hendrix the musician shines through, this is not the most insightful profile of Hendrix the man. The circumstances surrounding his death, for example, are hardly touched upon (girlfriend at the time Monika Dannemann gets only a few seconds of screen time). Interview footage with Hendrix himself plus some occasionally rambling and incoherent comments from such intimates as his father, army buddies, ex-girlfriends (including Linda Keith, who "discovered" him in New York and brought him to England), and fellow musicians all take second place to the music itself. loved it after seeing the hendrix movie, i was very curious about him and purchased live at Monterey.. now i have 3 books and 4 dvds about him. and plan on buying more!! jimi was sexy, talented, and knew his s*it!! i agree with what one of the reviewers said; noel was rude when he interrupted precious jimi by makin that loud noise with his guitar, but thats what haters do. as usual, the haters only made him stronger. i hope jimis still playin in the heavens!! buy the dvd.
Hendrix Greatest Performance Ever! Jimi's historical Monterey, CA show is fanastic! If you are a Hendrix fan this is a must have. Before this show a very small precentage of the US even knew about him, but after Monterey he became a household name. One of the best live recordings ever. Jimi's attitude is very carefree and his personality really shines through. As a guitar player he had no equal in 1967 and this DVD proves the point well.
The single best biovideo about Jimi Hendrix All things considered, I'd say this is the best comprehensive video of Jimi's early years as a backup guitarist and his titanic rise to the top in the rock world of the mid 60's. The amazing talent of his songwriting and especially his virtuosity and style as a guitar master and performer changed the way the electric guitar was viewed by the world. He had a great influence on guitar players forever, from the greatest to the beginners. Many videos have been made attempting to illustrate Hendrix's life and tragically brief reign at the top of electric rock but his one is the most educational and entertaining. Interviews with contemporaries and friends as well as plenty of footage of Jimi at his finest tell the story excellently.
