Amazon.com: Will Farrell followed up his star-making vehicle Elf, which matched his fine-tuned comic obliviousness to a sweet sincerity, with a more arrogant variation on the same character: Ron Burgundy, a macho, narcissistic news anchor from the 1970s. Along with his news posse--roving reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd, Clueless), sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner), and dim-bulb weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell, Bruce Almighty)--Burgundy rules the roost in San Diego, fawned upon by groupies and supported by a weary producer (Fred Willard, Best In Show) who tolerates Burgundy's ego because of good ratings. But when Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate, View from the Top) arrives with ambitions to become an anchor herself, she threatens the male-dominated newsroom. Anchorman has plenty of funny material, but it's as if Farrell couldn't decide what he really wanted to mock, and so took smart-ass cracks at everything in sight. Still, there are moments of inspired delirium. --Bret Fetzer

I Love Lamp 12 or 13 years ago it seemed that most comedy films had either Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey in it. While this was not necessarily a bad thing for those who enjoyed the comic styles of Sandler and Carrey, it soon became evident that they were playing the exact same role with every film and soon this became quite tiring for me. It is probably for this reason that I have been quite slow to warm up to the films of Will Ferell despite enjoying some of his comedic scenarios on SNL. However, Talladega Nights is a guilty pleasure of mine and I did like Ferell's role in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, so I decided to give Anchorman: the Legend of Ron Burgundy a shot.
Anchorman is the tale of Ron Burgundy, a 1970s anchorman with great hair, a cheesy mustache, and some suits that look as if they would burst into flames if you smoked to close to him. Of large stature, and possessing an even larger ego, Burgundy is beloved by his audience and is the number one anchorman in San Diego. Supported by his news team of the reporter Brian Fantana, weatherman Brick Tamland, and sportscaster Champ Kind, the sky is the limit for Burgundy, however, one day, a woman Veronica Corningstone comes into the sausage festival that makes up the all male news team and while Burgundy holds affectionate feelings for her at first, soon a bitter rivalry begins.
Anchorman seems to have as many detractors as it does supporters. Yes, the films depiction of the 1970s is a bit extravagant, yes, the film tends to go unhinged at times and go off on tangents, but it is all in good fun. Not a masterpiece by any means, but worth seeing, at least, for Jack Black's encounter with a burrito.
