Amazon.com: What a combo! Tobe Hooper, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, teamed up with family-oriented producer Steven Spielberg to make Poltergeist. The film is about a haunted suburban tract home in a development very much like the Arizona one in which Spielberg was raised. (Because it came out the same summer as Spielberg's E.T., it was tempting to see both movies as representing Spielberg's ambivalent feelings about childhood in suburbia. One was a fantasy, the other a nightmare.) Spielberg also cowrote the screenplay, which taps into primal, childlike fears of monsters under the bed, monsters in the closet, sinister clown faces, and all manner of things that go bump in the night. At first, some of the odd happenings in the house are kind of funny and amusing, but they grow gradually creepier until the film climaxes in a terrifying special-effects extravaganza when 5-year-old Carole Anne (Heather O'Rourke) is kidnapped by the spooks and held hostage in another dimension. Though not nearly as frightening as Hooper's magnum opus, or the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, which came along two years later, Poltergeist is one of the smartest and most entertaining horror pictures of its time. --Jim Emerson
Satisfaction overall It took a little longer to receive this movie compared to others I've ordered. But, the DVD arrived in good shape and plays without interruption. I would consider another purchase from this vendor.
Just another 5 stars for Poltergeist Love it or hate it (and who could hate it?), Poltergeist is one of the most thoroughly entertaining and iconic horror movies ever created. From start to finish, this movie is a perfect blend of horror and comedy that is further enhanced with a phenomenol cast and great special effects.
Poltergeist is the tale of a suburban family whose lives take an unexpected turn when their daughter Carol Anne is taken into another dimension by malevolent ghosts that plague the home. After enlisting the help of psychic Tangina Baron to help them retrieve Carol Anne, they find that the battle against the sprits for their home, and their lives for that matter, will wage on even after their daughter is rescued.
Remember the scene where the tree attacks Robbie? How about when the parapsychologist tears his face off in the mirror, or when the Diane turns around and finds all the chairs stacked upon each other when a second earlier they were neatly arranged on the floor? Or when the ghosts all come down the stairway, or the clown attack, or when all the corpses pop up out of the swimming pool, or when they push the television outside of the hotel room? The amount of memorable scenes from Poltergeist is a testament in itself to just how great this movie really is. Even if you have never seen the movie, these scenes are referenced and parodied in pop culture so often that you would undoubtedly know what movie they come from. Not to mention the numerous famous quotes from the movie such as "They're here" or "This house is clean".
Poltergiest is a classic is every sense of the word. It can be watched and rewatched over and over again and still maintains its power after all these years. Should be included in every movie lover's collection.
Classic My teenager loves horror flicks so I got this for her collection. I figured she should have the classics.
