Reviewing the unreviewable How do you review an album that's not meant to be taken seriously on almost any level that is the soundtrack of a movie that was a comedy full of in jokes about hard rock and metal? Answer? With great difficulty. So here is a brief run down of what you get;
Jack Black and Kyle Gass basically spend a lot of time twanging acoustic guitars in a plentiful supply of acoustic tracks with vocals delivered by Black in a nicely produced work where it's actually important to hear the lyrics. The album basically follows the course of the film and a number of the tunes like ....well like a bunch of them don't really make a lot of sense taken out of that context. So you really need to see the film dudes. But other parts of the disc do work even if you've yet to catch a look at the film, like the lead track and track #13 Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown). The whole thing works better if your into hard rock and metal and essentially if you liked School of Rock or the film picking this up on the cheap is a good move and it will be a mood lifter when you want to listen to something that won't melt the pet beagle.
That's about it, all that remains is to point out the long and distinguished list of guest musicians like Meatloaf, Ronnie James Dio and Dave Grohl and it's quite clear that all the people on the album have some talent and it's kinda funny that they were all happy to get into this project.
Cheery listening but just be warned that a lot of the tracks will probably be guilty pleasures of comedic worth to you but your not going to put a lot of the numbers here onto your self burned greatest hits disc to play in your car.
Edited Version: Even Funnier Listening to this album brings back all the fondest memories of the movie, like Jables blowing up a guy's head with his voice or flying through the clouds with Bigfoot on their way to the "Stwah-bewwy Wivver".
The edited version I bought is even funnier with the words they have chosen to substitute instead of just dropping the audio.
For Example:
-Kickapoo: "My Father says your evil, but, man, he can suck a ROCK"! -Classico: "He is going to MOW YOUR FREAKING GRASS and you know, his name is Kyle Gass...rocking and FREAKING rolling, etc." -The Government Totally Sucks: "The goverment would BUTTERCUP his right-e-ous A!"
Anyway, as you can imagine, they had a lot of "F-Bombs" to cover up, but you still get like 3 of them in for dramatic effect.
So if you can get your hands on an edited copy, I highly recommend it, otherwise enjoy it for what it is: rockin' riffs with funny twists.
Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny box set If you love Tenacious D get this, if you love Jack Black and Kyle Gas get this, if you loved the movie, guess what...get this. This set has a cd with very funny songs on it, a mini poster which is great, 9 tarrot cards and the pick of destiny itself. I strongly recommended this for anyone who is a fan. I sure love it!!!
Great is the D The cd is great the box is kinda cool but doesn't really offer much i really just bought it because it had the pick of destiny inside. Plus the tarot cards from the movie.
Excellent! despite gratuitous F bomb use I loved it! Once you get past the overused F word its AWESOME! Mr. Black is hilarious AND talented with his use and abuse of music. Once you get past the language thing...the music really rocks AND makes you laugh at the same time...I'm still not sure how bigfoot fits in...but the line: "Your gonna gargle man-aze...ewugh!" still cracks me up!
