Description: Critics have described Elfen Lied as "weird,"(Anime Planet), "surprisingly sadistic,"(Gamerz Edge), and "addictive" (Animesou). Now wonder, when you consider what makes this series hum! Lucy, a beautiful young mutant, is bred by the government to be the ultimate weapon. Armed with unfathomable powers, she escapes her handlers, but loses her memory in the process. Fortunately, our young waif is taken in by two well-meaning students. Now, with government killers on her trail, the disposition of a five year old, and a hair trigger for ultraviolence, Lucy and her young friends must unravel the dark secret of her legacy before it’s too late.
One of the worst I ever seen! I been watching anime for only a year now. And this is the 41st title I seen so far, and boy what a rotten experiance... Made me very grumpy indeed. The story totally contradicts itself, its a salad bowl of mixed genres, plus I hated every last one of the characters. The characters are very very annoying. People actually think Nyu is cute. This is by far my most hated character in anything I have ever seen to include that schizo bimbo Yuka. And man, it's so hard to take this terrible series serious. I can go on and on about how the fan service cheapened the horror and the comedy cheapend the romance. But since so many others supposedly see the art behind this. Why bother?
Great Series! This anime is very addictive to watch. If you enjoy a good amount of gore, some nudity here and there, and characters utilizing amazing powers then I would highly recommend this anime. However, there are 3 reasons I didnt give this a five. The killings/ violent acts in this anime are not confined to adults, there are a few instances where kids get sliced up pretty bad. Also the ending could definitely be more complete, not to mention that this is fairly short at only 13 episodes. Even so this show has a great musical score and surprisingly good storyline and I would say paying $30 for 13 episodes is a great deal and definitely recommend it.
a lotta Hype The background artists are fabulous... The characters are pretty good with depth but, since it's such a long series you would expect nothing less. The foreground/character artists did not nearly enough to make the characters "real". I was very disappointed in the production... too much flash-back fill, rehashing the same event over and over. I would not recommend this series to anyone except the die-hard manga collector.
Wow! What a series! I was watching this on the internet, and it was the most saddest anime I got to see. My favorite character is Nyu. She makes me want to laugh. This is a dark anime, and it is not for little kitties. Unless... if you are a mature teenager. This is the best anime I have ever seen!
Great anime cut short To start off, I would like to address that if you have read the manga this anime is based off you might be very disappointed to see that the anime cut out about half of the story. This of course leaves a lot of loose ends and leaves you with the same feeling as other animes that have done the same. i.e. Berserk, Inuyasha and Tenjho Tenge to name a few. Unlike those manga which have either just recently finished or are still being made this one if it was full based off the manga would only be double what it is now in episodes which is only a mere 13 with a OVA not found in this collection. So I find it unacceptable that they did not cover the whole story.
All that being said for what it does cover is very spot on and really brings it alive. All but the last two episodes are pretty well exactly as they were in the manga. If you are like me and are totally stuck on following the original work then this one does it well. The animations are just as they where at the end of the mangas run where the creator found his style.
For those who have yet to read the manga or have no intentions this anime is still worth watching even if it is only part of a larger story. It can only be explained by saying it takes the worst things in this world and the best things in this world and puts them all together. This can range from the beating of little puppies and molesting children to human kindness and understanding that can be so sweet it might give you cavities. On top of that there is a great psychological aspect of it that interests me as a psych major and more then likely anyone else that is interested in the field or just likes psychological movies/shows.
So to try and sum this all up, what we have here is a great anime that was cut short of its original manga creation but still delivers a very spot on replication of the first half of the manga. For those who want to see a great psychological show with some really messed up things this will be perfect. It is short enough to not feel like a totally waste of time when you get that bitter taste in your mouth at the end where you feel like you been cheated out of the ending like a certain other anime that was 167 episodes and 4 movies with no conclusion. As long as you are prepared for that bitterness it is a real worth while experience.
