Amazon.com essential video: Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. --Tom Keogh
Sargent York at its best Sargent York movie classic in DVD is the very best format. It enables a viewer to watch the whole movie and to go to specific scenes if the viewer wants to. Best yet was the reasonable cost in new condition.
Sgt. York the ultimate Soldier I found the 2 disk set of Sgt York a very good buy. The second disk is as good as the movie itself. I as a gun collector and a historian found some flaws in the movie itself. He did not use a 1903 Springfield he used a M-1917 Enfield Rifle that fired a 30-06 bullet and he did not use a German Luger he used a M-1911 Colt 45 Cal automatic Pistol.Sgt York consulted on this movie and I cannot figure out why he did not correct these mistakes.Anyone interested in Sgt York should get the July 2007 issue of Armchair General Magazine and look at Battlefield Detective they have visited the actual site and confirmed the actual fete of Sgt. York. He is indeed a hero and he ranks right up there with Audie Murphy who was a Medal of Honor Winner in WW II. I would recommend the movie Sgt York to anyone.
Movie Buff This story would be a five if it was remade. Hard to give such an old movie a five but I love the story and I live near the VA hospital called Alvin C York.
Sergent York This is a wonderful and beautiful movie. Gary Cooper is fantastic. My father-in -law turned us on to this movie years ago and it has been of favorite of our ever since.
sargent york i've seen this movie over 10 times throughout my life (i am 60) and it always inspires me, like all the classic movies of the old days like it's a wonderful life, friendly persuasion, and audey murphy's to hell and back.
