Amazon.com: Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock pair up again in what could be described as the anti-Speed: The Lake House, a sweet, relaxed-paced, whimsical romance. When Alex Wyler (Reeves, The Matrix) moves into an unusual glass house on stilts over a lake, he discovers a note from the previous tenant in the mailbox--but no one's lived in the house for years. He replies and soon discovers that he's corresponding with a doctor named Kate Forster (Bullock, Miss Congeniality) who's writing from two years in the future. Their correspondence turns romantic and their paths cross in unexpected ways, but when they try to truly connect, danger looms. Though the plot of The Lake House sounds potentially static, the movie is skillfully structured and, despite some truly awful dialogue, will exert an emotional pull on anyone willing to embrace the device of the time-travelling mailbox. What the movie really demonstrates, though, is the genuine rapport between Bullock and Reeves; Reeves, though handsome, has a wooden presence--but in his few scenes with Bullock, his stiffness transforms into a palpable yearning. On-screen chemistry is slippery and hard to define, but these two have it. --Bret Fetzer
The Lake House Unique story line. The movie held my attention. Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves were an excellant match for the their roles.
Mail Has Never Been More Dynamic! OK, first of all, this is one of the top 5 movies of all time. Before I even saw the movie, I was like "Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves are re-teaming for a movie about living in worlds 2 years apart, in the same house, but connected by a magical mailbox?!!! This is going to be one of my all time top 10 favorite movies of all time!" What I did not know at the time, however, was that it was going to be one of my top 5 movies of all time, easily beating 6-10. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself--the self that hadn't yet seen the movie--that it would be this great. Maybe I'll mail myself a letter. No, I'm just kidding. :)
Anyway, why this movie is so great is that it harnesses all the charm of Keanu Reeves and the spitfireness of Sandra Bullock without all of that distracting plot that you might find in a movie like "Speed." And by the way, how difficult is it to believe that a bus would blow up if it goes less than 55 MPH! I didn't buy it.
However, "The Lake House" is a movie grounded in reality and has a real heart at its center. Every time I watch the movie, and at this point it's about bi-weekly, I notice more nuances to Keanu's acting, and I get choked up every time I realize that these two wonderful characters really may never meet because they live in two completely different time periods. I worry that they're never going to meet (even though, yes, I've seen it so many times)--which is part of the magic of moviemaking I guess. And I think even if they do meet, will they understand each other's worlds? If the me of now were talking to the me of 2006, what would they possibly have in common? The me of now would be all talking about iPhones and stuff, and the me of 2006 would be like, "what the heck are iPhones? Do you mean iPods?" And the me of now would probably just get really, really frustrated.
Essentially the movie is amazing and you should really see it on a big screen to get the full effects. If you don't like it, I wonder what you have in your body where your heart should be? I really do wonder that.
A Love Story of Fate This movie is so wonderful. It takes you through an emotional journey. The story is about a man and woman in love that live at a lake house... just not at the same time, two years apart to be exact. They correspond through letters left in the mailbox for each other. An incredible tale unfolds about true love and perfect timing.
If you enjoyed The Lake House, then I also recommend Just Like Heaven with Reese Witherspoon, another great love story of timing and fate.
Touching Movie with a Twist? I didn't know what to expect when I watched this movie with all the jumping around in time. It did draw me into the hope of a love story.
Sandra Bullock shines once again in this movie with her co star. A great love story!
