2 out of 5 starsNothing new here, tedious elements, value is subpar 8.5-9 only
This game is awesome, but it is also way over hyped by the video game junket, i.e. everyone who depends on VG's to pay their salary.

This is not a 10, I'd give it an 8.5-9 at most. There is just not much to do that's all that fun other than the missions which get repetitive and due to the horrible handling vehicles can be a tedious lesson in frustration. I can count at least a couple times I've tried all the missions available and found all of them this way, this one doesn't keep you playing like SA did. The motorcycles are almost un-ride-able and you are forced to use them in at least 5 missions.

So handling sucks the fun out of it a lot. Also the character is so slow in almost everything he does, running, changing weapons, stealing cars, etc. The cell phone is more annoyance than anything, you are constantly inundated with calls for non-story things, if I wanted the Sims I'd play that! Ditto for Gran Turismo/Forza!

This is like a product with a very sexy package only to be just a generic inside, not worth close to $65 this just turns me off of Rockstar in the future, it seems like no one remembered what made GTA so fun to begin with. After a few years of waiting it's a real let down, yes RockStar got it's $500M on this one from everyone, but the next one I'll pass on buying new. My advice is to wait till this comes down to it's actual value, about $35.

4 out of 5 starsgood value and open ended free play.
This game has very good value and the play is done freely. This is a very adult game. Thants what the M on the cove means. If you are supid enough to buy this for your little kid then don't get all mad when you see what is in it. This is not necessarily an evil game it is what the player makes it. Maybe people just don't like to accept that people are bad in a consequence free environment.

5 out of 5 starsVery Awesome
I'm over 26 hours into the game, so I feel like I can legitimately talk about it.

I've been playing GTA since GTA 2. The visuals and the physics in this game really shine. The story is the best of any GTA. There's not as much to do in the single player as San Andreas for example, but THERE'S MULTIPLAYER. This is the first GTA with MP.

I would recommend it to every PS3 owner looking for a fun open world game.

4 out of 5 starsBest GTA, but not worth all the perfect 10's
I pre ordered this game a long time ago because I had always been a huge fan of GTA. I got it and played it. It was awesome, I really loved it. But it isn't perfect. There have been freezing issues on both versions of the game and the graphics aren't exactly revolutionary either. The gameplay is extroadinary and the new elements introduced in GTA IV are great. It just doesn't seem to have the same rampage potential, but that's okay.
This game is probably one of the best of played during this generation of consoles, so I do recommend it. It's just not as good as it is hyped up to be.

4 out of 5 starsGreat Game, Very Fun Online, Some Missing Elements
Grand Theft Auto: IV is a very solid game. The offline story mode is fun, but tends to get very repetitive at times. There is too much, "Go here, kill them, escape without dieing" style missions. As well, there are a lot of things that fans of past GTA games will find disappointing about this game. Some of them are:

- No firefighter, police, taxi, or ambulance side-missions
- Not a very big emphasis on property ownership
- No swimming underwater
- No controllable airplanes or jets (only helicopters)
- Not a great selection of vehicles; you'll see the same 20-25 or so basic cars for the entire game
- Difficult aiming system
- No "L2" or "R2" side views while driving cars; must use the right analog stick to look around
- Vehicles are difficult to steer from the start; no "driving skill" as seen in GTA: San Andreas; must make use of the R1 handle brake to make sharp turns at higher speeds
- Not many interior locations. Those you can go into are either small or virtually pointless
- No robbing pedestrians or shop owners at gunpoint (i.e. they do not drop money when held up)
- Cops are too powerful. They will blast you with a shotgun if you have even one wanted star. However, once you get moving and elude them the cop chases are great

Some of the better things about this game that I've noticed are:

- MUCH smarter traffic system; cars will attempt to steer out of the way if you are coming at them head-on or fast from behind; traffic cars use blinkers; cops are very smart and will use PIT (fishtail) maneuvers and spike strips (very detailed) to stop you
- Car accidents are simply incredible. They are detailed with an unbelievable amount of 'realisticness'. If you roll your car the body of your car will be damaged uniquely in the locations that got hit; If you hit a pole your hood will wrap around it; If you scrape a car the paint from the other car will stain yours, and vice versa; hitting pedestrians will leave a dent/smash mark EXACTLY where the pedestrian made contact with the car, including smash marks on the windshield; cars can be disabled if damaged too much or if the engine receives a heavy direct blow; tires can blow from smashing your car into something heavy/sharp, steering sharply, or gunfire
- Explosions look amazing. Fire in this game looks like the real thing, and explosions are the same with insane detail
- Police wanted level is VERY realistic. In the past games you would have the same wanted level no matter where you were. Now, there is a flashing range on the map where cops are *looking* for you. If you get out of this range then cops will call off their search after a short while and you'll lose all wanted stars. Of course, more stars means a greater police search range, but it's all good. Changing cars also will deter cops away from you and make it harder for you to be found.
- Hijacking a car or stealing a car is now a process. If you steal a parked car Niko (the main character) will smash the window if the car is locked, sit inside, and then proceed to hot wire the engine. When stealing a car that is occupied, the other drivers will often fight back
- The water graphics are jaw-dropping. When you fly the helicopter at sunset over Algonquin (Manhattan) you would swear that you were watching TV of an actual helicopter flying over New York. The glistening water looks great.

There are a lot more 'good/bad' things about this game, but all of them basically balance each other out. When one thing was taken out of this game it seems like another great thing was put in.

The online gameplay is very, very fun. You can play with up to 16 people in a free-roaming city. And yes, the entire city is freely open with all building interiors and traffic/pedestrians while online. There are also a lot of mini games online like Deathmatch, Race, and a few more. Free-roam seems to be the most popular by a longshot, though.

In all, this game is awesome. If you liked GTA III, GTA: Vice City, OR GTA: San Andreas you'll LOVE GTA: IV.
