David Arnold got his first break with this score and it's easy to see why. Without being too pompous or condescending he has taken the listener on a journey along with the film. Using a variety of instrumentation the soundtrack winds it's way along - and this edition has a number of extra parts than the original release. One of my favourite aspects of the score - and it took me until my third listen to really notice it - is the lightness of being throughout the piece. There are fast paced sections for sure. There are some slow and low moments to elicit the required response from the audience definitely. And there are certainly some signature motifs used. But what is also there bubbling away underneath is a lightness of touch. And it got me thinking back to the film and it struck me that the movie is almost totally filmed in bright light. Even the throne room scenes are done on a set that suggest an airy expansiveness. Thus with his score Arnold has deftly married his own work into the finished product.
This wasn't by accident. As the useful liner notes discuss, Arnold really feels the composer is part of the movie making process. This is borne out not only in the music but also the audio quality of the disc, things aren't compressed to the point of distraction as with so many releases in the 00's.
The reason I dock one star from a potential score of five (and almost took another off in fact) is that the few dozen tracks here don't really stand out as a brilliant score of a stand alone nature. While this film score is excellent in it's acceptance of compromise for the purpose of entertainment, it is unlikely that you will want to listen to it again and again and again. It has hit my stereo a number of times for sure, but the skip button is liberally used. Not due to any inherent problem with the music - but this piece is very much a film score for listening to as part of the film.
Terrific! David Arnold has written a magnificent score. It is a thematically, lush score. It feels a cross between "Lawrence of Arabia" meets "The Mummy". I wish Arnold would do more film scores because he is a rare talent among the new crop of composers out there that can't seem to make any score thematically memorable. Arnold definitely can. His style is in the league of Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Maurice Jarre, etc... Excellent score!
Perfect in every way! This is an excellent score to Stargate, and the orchestra performs and sounds very good! This is, from what I can tell, the complete score, which I am also pleased with. Some of my favorite tracks are the overture, Slave Rebellion, Kasuf Returns, and the closing titles intro at the end of the soundtrack. Overall this is perfect in every way: sound, performance, melody, orchestration! A must-buy for every Stargate fan!
Great Score! This is an amazing score and I wish I would have gotten it sooner. I checked it out after watching the movie recently before I got into the tv series, realizing then that it had some amazing music. This Deluxe Edition is great too, it pretty much has all the music featured in the movie. Well worth the purchase for any soundtrack collector.
