Amazon.com: The 2006 limited-edition two-disc release of George Lucas's epic space fantasy Star Wars is not only the first time the movie has been officially available by itself on DVD. It marks the first-ever DVD release of Star Wars as it originally played in theaters in 1977. What does that mean exactly? Well, for starters, the initial title crawl proclaims that this is just Star Wars, not Episode IV, A New Hope. Second, the film is without the various "improvements" and enhancements Lucas added for the theatrical rerelease in 1997 as well as the DVD premiere in 2004. So no more critters and droids scurrying around the port of Mos Eisley when Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi first arrive, no meetings between Han Solo and Jabba the Hut and between Luke and Biggs (extraneous scenes that were cut in 1977), no enhanced explosions during the final reel, and--most importantly to some fans--no more of Greedo shooting first in the bar. Instead Han is free to be the scoundrel and not even let Greedo squeeze off a shot.
What do you lose by watching the 1977 version? Dolby Digital 5.1 EX sound, for one thing (only 2.0 Surround here). Digital cleanup for another--Tatooine looks like it's been coated with an additional layer of sand cloud. Yes, it's true that fans who want better sound and picture can always watch the 2004 version of the movie also included in this set. But chances are good that they already picked up the trilogy edition of all three films, so their decision to buy the 2006 two-disc edition depends on how much they want the original film. The official LucasFilm stance is that this is an individual release of the 2004 version of Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope, and the 1977 version of the film is merely a "bonus feature." Common speculation is that the only reason the original versions are seeing the official light of day at all is to undercut the booming black market for the laserdisc version. Star Wars fans will have to decide for themselves if that's worth the purchase. --David Horiuchi

35% This rocks! It's pretty goood. The lightsabers in the theater version look like the ones in I II III.The explosion of Alderaan & the death star looks false though. The enhanced version is barely different to the originals.
Worst DVD Edition. I bought this edition to watch full screen as mentioned, both special edition and original theatrical should be in Full, correct?. What i found is only the special edition is full but old original release in letterBox !!! The front cover mentioned it is Full Screen editions, what i dont understand there are two DVD versions at moment, Full and Widescreen selling separately, is both versions for the original theatrical are in wide screen???. How this happend ? Is this pure error or what can be? I really can't understand it. Also, the transfer for original 1977 release was not so good, it is noticeable a lower quality. Yes the transfer for special edition was absolutely finest and best picture quality ever seen, it has perfect sharpness and color all in perfect balance. But why Mr.Lucas ignor his original release when it should be best version. Since launching DVD most movie makers went into Dir cut when they should relized there original release is best and finest. Honostly, i was much waiting to have original release in full screen DVD for long time, while the special edition have many added uneeded scenes in my opinion like Jabba and entering Mos Eisly, i realy feel they are kiddish and not for adults. I cant belive it, until now we still cannot see original release in perfect way !!!. Thing are getting worst.
Amazing at Last! Finally a DVD where Han shoots first and there are no unnecessary effects from the special edition. I am so thrilled that the original theatrical release is on this DVD. If you're a fan of the originals, buy this DVD before George Lucas goes crazy again and decides to pull the originals out of print.
It's STAR WARS!! What can I say that hasn't been said many times before. The film that started it all... This is a great movie - modern mythology at its best. Out of the Star Wars films, this is probably my 2nd favorite, but Revenge of the Sith is pretty close. My favorite SW film is naturally Empire Strikes Back. Anyway, I wish they made more films like this nowadays. Thank goodness for DVD! And it's great to finally have the Theatrical (Original) versions available to the public - even if the audio and video quality is not quite up to snuff with the "official" versions of the films today.
Star Wars IV Of course I like the theatrical version best. Sometimes the enhanced version throws you off - you're not expecting stuff. Good show.
