I dream about Spore I really love this game. I can't say much more than that. The depth in this game is phenomenal, and you can apply all the creativity you can muster to make your very own creation.
Fantastic levels, all operating differently, essentially bringing 5 games into the one. Each game is able to be played by themself, or concurrently - and I swear I am so addicted to this game that when I wake up in the mornings I can see Spore creations dancing in front of my eyes.
There are some downfalls - there appear to be problems with operating on a Mac - and many people are upset over this. I understand where they're coming from, Spore is touted to be Mac friendly - however I am way to much in love to have this ruin our relationship. I'll be installing Windows on my Mac just so I can play, whilst I wait for EA to come up with a fix for the Mac.
I would highly recommend this game to anyone who loves their life sims, or their creation sims.
This REALLY sucks !!! My kids totally begged for this game so I broke down and bought TWO copies. The first one installed on my younger sons computer with only minor issues, however it would not let me create an online user name and password. I thought no big deal. So I went and installed it on my older sons computer. Keep in mind I bought these computers at the same time and they are identical, with an identical OS win XP .. It will install but WILL NOT launch. So then I log in to Amazon to read reviews, you would be surprised at how many people post tips here. Then I start reading this DRM junk.. I'm total p!ssed ... After buying TWO copies of this thing, I will have no problem taking it back to wall mart tomorrow. Consumers do not need to put up with this CRAP!!!!!
Lots to create, but nothing to do with it The content creation system in this game is excellent. The only problem is there isn't anything fun to do with the content.
There are also people who are not so good at creating content, and upload it anyway. Whether it is inadvertent, or they are actually Spore griefers is unknown, but in any case a white cube doesn't make for a very interesting building. These things can be deleted, with difficulty, but there is no way to ban a person's content because you dislike their art.
Great potential - critical flaws I've enjoyed every aspect of the gameplay so far, but I feel that there are a few critical flaws with the peripherals that still have not been addressed. I usually don't buy games until they've been out at least a year thanks to the industry standard of putting out flawed and buggy games in an effort to obtain our dollars earlier than they should. Unfortunately I just couldn't wait to play this one, and I am yet again disappointed by functionality issues.
My primary complaint is with Sporepedia. It basically doesn't work. Many of my creatures and ships do not upload to the system, and I find it almost impossible to download fresh content. The sporecast system is so broken, that it makes the general Sporepedia seem professional in comparison. Since sharing content was one of the really intriguing aspects of this game, this failure was a real disappointment. Even more frustrating, is that my content appears just fine on the Spore website, proving that the problem is somewhere within the game itself.
My other issue is that since installing this game to my computer, my computer runs slowly and inefficiently. I will not jump onto the bandwagon and say this is due to the DRM - I have no proof of that. Still... something is causing my system to run incredibly slowly whether I am running Spore or not. What could be the cause? It was fine before the installation. This is also frustrating and disappointing.
Gameplay itself was nothing but fun. From a one-celled organism all the way to space, I found the game to be entertaining, easy to play, intuitive to learn, with great graphics and sound, and lots of variables to keep me coming back for another round of galactic domination.
All in all, I would recommend buying this game, but wait and be patient - don't buy it until they've patched it and resolved all the performance issues. If we don't buy flawed products, manufacturers will eventually stop making them that way. At least that's my theory.
Sadly lacking, but strangely addictive The majority of these reviews, primarily the 1-2 stars, deal solely with the DRM. Granted, I haven't had to deal with that particular aspect, but Maxis has heard the screams of outrage, and the winds, they are a blowing.
All that aside, Spore is as engaging and addicitive as the Sims, only with you now playing a "God simulator" as opposed to a "life you wish you had" simulator. Starting from a single cell, you advance, developing traits and characteristics depending on behavior, diet, and how you approach challenges. You can be a social canivore, a omnivoric war mongerer, or a peacful vegan. The setup is hamstrung somewhat by the treasure hunt aspect. Certain evolutionary quirks can only be found digging up bones, which are scattered throughout the island. By the time you find everything, however, you're usually locked into one style or another.
Advancing to tribe, you have to ally or destroy all other civilizations. Once you're through the tutorial, you find your in charge of a cluster of peons, and set them to their tasks. You either have to focus exclusively on farming and bribing other villages, or thread a needle for wiping out their villages. Bribery is so much easier and faster, its almost like cheating your way through. So long as you have instruments, this stage can be completed in 10 minutes. The buildings are dumbed down and the majority of outfitting is cosmetic. Theres no side arcs or quests, like in space stage, and you have to constantly war to stay alive. Blst through this ASAP.
Then you get to the civilization stage. Rinse and repeat the previous version, though with a bit more complexity. Replace bribing villages with buying out cities, and you're there. Also introduced is religous conversion, which is annoying in the extreme. Pray you don't run into all military or religous when you're starting, or your doomed if you're economic, which has the offensive and defensive capabilities of a napkin.
Then you get to space stage, which has the lions share of content, and the best pick ups. creature abduction, interstellar diplomacy, colonial development, all wonderous facets of a expansive and lushly populated universe. had all previous eras had the same level of detail, with the exception of the Cell era, the game would've been 4-5 stars. However, all these annoyances aside, the game is so addictive that you'll be playing it into the wee hours of morning even as you curse Space Pirates for stealing your Yellow Spice.
