In My Name Is Bill W. he plays Bill Wilson, the overreaching businessman from the Roaring '20s who went on to found Alcoholics Anonymous. Woods gets plenty of chances to stretch out here in Bill's headlong slide to the bottom, through the terrors of the Wall Street crash (which amplifies a two-fisted drinking problem) and into the loss of everything he holds dear. Yet Woods also is convincing as the man who understands just how insidious his disease is and learns to try to take everything one day at a time. A great movie about the beginnings of AA I first saw this movie on TV 12 or 15 years ago. It's well played, although a little corny in some spots, and I feel that it moves along too quickly in other places to get the real feel for what was going on at the time. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie as a whole and as I am 20 years sober this year, I am quite glad to find a better copy than my recorded one. Garner plays a great Doctor Bob and Woods an ambitious Bill W. The scenes at the hospital show how important the doctor there was to the creation of the group and that alcoholism was being recognized as something other than a "moral malady". If you are interested in how AA came to be and who was involved, this is a great video. Otherwise, find a meeting in your area and keep going until you get your questions answered. Worked for me.
Mr Borchert (the writer) has done a magnificent job! - Well Done! This movie is "The Gold Standard" on any movie that deals with hope, fellowship and recovery. Simply, it is the best! Excellent work Bill!
good good movie on the struggles of founder of aa. mostly factual, very little hollywood hype.
Every Alcoholic in Recovery needs this! This movie was a great addition to understanding how AA was built. In addition, seeing how Bill W. had his own life's challenges and marital issues like MANY people.
His honesty and life's' work has helped millions. If you are a devote recovering alcoholic you should see this movie. It will show you the roots of the organization you hold dear.

The people portraying the founders bill wilson and dr. robert smith are excellent and credible james woods as bill wilson and james garner as dr. robert smith-highly recommend!!
