In Its Own League I usually don't count Metal Gear Solid 3 when making my comparisons to other Metal Gears because it doesn't involve Solid Snake in anyway. In its most basic form MGS 3 is more of a 'spin off'. But an important one at that*. With that said lets begin the review.
In MGS3 you start off playing as a rookie Fox operative named 'Naked Snake',your mission starts off pretty simple:Rescue a hostage. But get much more complicated than that when you find out the leader of your best friends unit, the cobras, has gone over to the Soviet Union,Thats right this game takes place during the cold war!
With that said there is really no 'high-tech' things in MGS3,The most advanced thing you have is your satellite radio haha.
MGS3 takes place in a number of environments, but the main one is in the jungle,And in a first for the Metal Gear Solid series, you have a camouflage gauge, you have to blend in with your surroundings or you will get seen by the enemy very easily. You have a number of different costumes to use as well as face paint.(This was later adopted into MGS4 only in a more modern way ;) )
And in another first for the metal gear solid series, you have to heal your own wounds, from gunshots,to cuts,to burns. You have to heal it all yourself with first aid materials. (This was not brought into MGS4)
One more first for MGS is the inclusion of a stamina gauge,if it gets too low your stomach will growl, aim will be off and you won't be able to hide yourself as good.
Graphics for MGS3 are some of the best on the PS2. The MGS games have been known to raise the bar with graphics but this is just amazing, the screen shots don't do it justice. I guarantee you, there is no better looking game for the PS2 that I know of. (I still can't believe how good they made it look on 7 year old hardware!)
All in all this is the best game to bear the Metal Gear Solid name, but like I said,Its not really part of Solid Snakes story,so I can't really judge it on that.
So for people who didn't know the order of the games should be like this:
MGS3 Metal Gear Metal Gear 2 MGS MGS2 MGS4
You really have to play all of them to get a FULL understanding of the whole MGS story.
*SPOILER ALERT,This is Big Bosses very first mission and it also explains why he became "Evil" MGS4 also dedicated a 30min cutscene to elaborate more on this as well.
One of the best PS2 games ever This is an amazing game. Metal Gear Solid is THE reason to have a PS2 when added to the Grand Theft Auto 3 series and the God of War series. The best thing about this game is that, due to the timeline of it, you don't need to know the MGS backstory, although it does make it more fun. The graphics and playing mechanics are as close to perfect as you can get. A must have for anyone with the Playstation 2.
As an added bonus, this version comes with the original Metal Gear game first released on MSX and NES. I had heard that the NES version was chopped up, but I never knew how much until playing this version. No wonder why I couldn't stand playing it on the NES.
"Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Subsistence" One of my favorite on-going video game series of all time. Metal Gear Solid 3 is no different. In fact, it is my favorite of all 4 playstation titles and the NES games as well.
Subsistence is especially nice because on the second disc, Persistence, the original "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge," are included.
A highly recommended purchase.
METAL GEAR IS SOLID FUN Once you get how the controls works, this game is fun by the truckload. You can practice whatever technique you want to defeat your enemies, CQC, weapons, etc.
Moreover, the different places where the action takes place makes this game absolute addictive.
Get it and live the cold war in its deepest sense!
MGS3: Not so much a game, but an experience. Time and time again, the third iteration in a series greatly surpasses the previous two. The MGS series is no exception. MGS1 redefined stealth action gaming, MGS2 expanded on the first game but was an utter disappointment due to the new character Raiden (although Raiden is not a terrible protagonist, he is nowhere near as interesting and pales in comparison to Solid Snake), and MGS3 certainly defines the whole series as well as games in general.
Truth be told, MGS3 is not the best stealth game. This is simply because it is not as accessible as Splinter Cell, Hitman, or Manhunt. It has many gameplay elements, which I applaud, but none of these come together in a very cohesive way. However, there is one thing that makes this game worth playing: STORY.
Mr. Kojima is a brilliant storyteller who can piece together all these diverging parts of the story and blend them together to form one massive story. This is done through numerous cutscenes (in fact, all the cutscenes in the game add up to over 3 hours) that are made for character development, which is something that not many games have even attempted.
Hideo once said that he prefers to focus on what "cannot be seen" over what "can be seen". The unseen elements would be story, atmosphere, and emotion. What can be seen, "cosmetics" for lack of a better word, are graphics and gameplay. Therefore, what he gives the gamers in return is a thought-provoking and Kleenex-consuming story, and this story helps this game transcend into being something that is more than just a mere game, but rather, an experience.
Although earlier in this review I said that this game isn't the best stealth game, that doesn't mean it isn't a superb game in general. Most games that focus more on stealth than action (Hitman, Splinter Cell, Manhunt, Thief 3, etc.) gets very clunky when it comes to running and gunning, and games that focus more on pure action (Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, Max Payne, etc.) renders sneaking around enemies impossible. MGS3, however, fits nicely between "stealth game" and "action game". My playing style for MGS3 is half-stealth and half-action (eliminating enemies quietly + all-out gun battles, just for variety), and this game supports both ways.
Now this may not be like any of the other video game reviews you have ever read, for I have never mentioned this game's graphics, sound, lasting appeal, etc. This is simply because this game is not so much a game, but more like a movie. A good movie. In fact, arguably the best movie ever made (sorry, but the Corleones must now abdicate their throne for Naked Snake).
MGS3 is more like an interactive film rather than a video game. Its unique and heartfelt story is enough to make even the toughest, meanest hombre cry (I bawled like a baby at the scene with Snake and The Boss in a flower patch), Its cinematography is second to none, and could also teach movie makers a thing or two about fight choreography.
I'm afraid I will have to strip Far Cry 2 the award of being "the best game I've ever played" (which caused quite a stir when I posted my review of that game here on Amazon).
