Amazon.com: Home to some of the world's best food and fashion, the French also have the wonderful habit of producing some of the world's best movies. With High Tension, French director Alexandre Aja offers up a bloody buffet of terror; a violent concoction of style over substance, with a bloody French twist. Two college girlfriends, Maria and Alex, take a weekend to study at the secluded country home of Alex's parents. Shortly after their arrival, a mysterious killer appears, and things take a shockingly terrible turn for the worse. As the horror and body count rises, Maria and Alex find themselves fighting for their lives, and it's revealed that things are not exactly as they seem. Essentially a one-act cat-and-mouse affair, High Tension is an explosive bloody thrill ride that rarely lets up. Oozing style in every color-saturated frame and boasting some intense performances, Aja mainly succeeds in sustaining an intense momentum throughout the film. The plot occasionally suffers from a thin, flimsy storyline, and the abundant graphic scenes of violence will either thrill and delight, or simply disgust. Nonetheless, this adrenalin-fueled addition to the genre gives the American slasher flick a real run for its money. High Tension is high-art horror, and comes highly recommended. --Matt Wold
The best French horror film I've seen yet Without doubt, HIGH TENSION is the best French horror film in ages. A lot of people criticise the 'twist ending', why? The film makes sense on every level, think about it! Aja has directed a great film and was released uncut at the cinemas over in the UK. Which suprised me with the moronic film censors. Sit back and watch a violent and gory rollercoaster of thrills and twists!
French Horror Wow, creepy intense, lots of gore, mystery, and great scare factor. What more can you want in a horror film. Tension says it all. Up there with the French horror movies, which by the way are also ones to watch, INSIDE and FRONTIER(S). Can't wait to watch MALEFIQUE. If anyone wants to add another I may want to watch, tell me, tell me, tell me.
Romance is dead! I was lucky enough to see this film at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Haute Tension is one of the most tense and violent films i have seen. The film had some cowering in their seats, the rest hyperventilating whilst trying to block the film from memory. At the end the applause was deafening. What more do you want?
Pretty Decent Movie One of the more violent movies I've seen. Not for the faint of heart...at all, really. In fact, if you have any aversion to blood, I'd recommend you steer clear of this movie.
Decent! The plot is this simple....roommates go home to study/visit. There is a happy family that is excited that their daughter is home with a friend. There is a well loved cute little kid and a seemingly happily married couple. And there is a "truck driving mad man" who comes into the house and kills everyone, takes one roommate hostage with the other following to help with the big escape. There are several other murders and great chase scenes, and lots of twists and turns in this movie, but you should be able to guess the ending way before it happens. My only criticism is that I really didn't like the dubbing, at times it made the movie a little low budget and hokey. But if you like scary movies, you will enjoy it, you just have to ignore the dubbing!
