WHAT MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT I simply cannot understand any negative reviews for this album. Gavin DeGraw has a vocal range and tone of voice that no modern artist can reach. Yes, there are comparisions to John Mayer, Howie Day etc, but for me Gavin is head and shoulders above them.
I don't understand how anyone can be negative to his lyrics - if you listen to the whole album and put the lyrics in context, you will see what a talented songwriter he is.
Yes, Gavin has signed to a record label, but I think he is one of the only artists who still manages to do his own thing without being manufactured and sold in a certain way which is very rare these days. Remember he turned down record deals before eventually signing. To me he sings what he wants to and how he wants to and that is what music is all about to me.
Anyone with a negative review has obviously never seen him live either. As he continues to grow in popularity (and yes, he falls prey to teen idols), he still plays amazing gigs despite the screaming girls wanting to touch him. Importantly he hasn't lost sight of his music and I hope he never will. It annoys me that just because he has picked up young screaming fans people automatically assume he has no credibitliy.
Just listen to the music - that is what it is all about. And also, check out his unreleased material - Dancing Shoes is by far the best unreleased song I have ever heard.
Negative reviews on this album are the only negative reviews I have ever heard about Gavin. I guess music is very personal, but for me, this hits the nail on the head. I love it.
Not now, not ever I'm surprised by some of the reactions to this CD. In truth, it is merely recycled R & B mixed in with a few amateurish high school songs. Gavin DeGraw is a white singer who's caught the public's fancy with his feigning hip persona, his blues-oriented voice and his contrived gospel mimicry. A closer look, however, reveals he's part and parcel of that familiar, commercially-sanitized version of this kind of music, pretending to be gritty but sounding untroublingly bland. Clive Davis discovered and promoted this guy which should tell you something. Outside of "I Don't Wanna Be" (which just happens to be the theme song for one of those WB teen soaps), there's not only little else that is worth mentioning, there's simply nothing inventive- or even slightly exciting on this album (try to wade through some of the ballads without getting bored). The music has all been done before- a lot better and a lot more genuinely. Those few appetizing bits and morsels that are occasionally thrown our way are clearly the result of the hand of a clever producer in the studio deftly weaving in a catchy intro here or a slick riff there. Otherwise, this stuff is shallow. Presenting it in acoustic versions, an attempt no doubt to give it some integrity, makes it no more appealing or authentic. As for what passes for "lyrics," sophomoric tripe such as "Girl, I think you're fine but I haven't got the time . . ." reminds us once again of that middle-teen mentality which embraces it. Save your praise for someone/something else. This is lowest-common-denominator, purposely well-packaged pabulum for the under-aged or uninitiated mass market. "Oh Char-eee-ot . . .," please! Take your driver and his wares and ride into the distance.
This song "crushed" my eardrums....:( The single "Crush" ultimately turned me off instantly as the fire-drill like shrill of the instrumental clashed terribly leaving my eardrums to wonder if maybe I prefer my morning alarm to this song...yet I continued listening to hopefully find a glimmer of hope for this one. DeGraw's third grader lyrics having to do with some girl that won't look his way, yet he remains to have a crush caused me to roll my eyes quite a few times...that is once I was able to understand the actual words through the messy, unorganized "noise". The varying intervals of segments in the song sound off-beat and simply draw away from a smoothness that was already lacking to begin with. The more I listened to DeGraw whine about her "crushing [his] soul," the more I felt that this song was "crushing" MY soul as I continued to bear through it. If I were to come across his pathetic whining on the radio, I would first confuse him with John Mayer or Howie Day before switching the station due to the cliche, childish lyrics!
Phenomenal "Crush" by Gavin DeGraw is an amazing song; the lyrics, the vocals, the instrumentals are all heavenly. The intro is a gorgeous display of piano performed by Gavin DeGraw, which creates the image of a peaceful, rushing waterfall. I know that that sounds like an oxymoron, but if you listen to the song, you will understand. The song combines this piano with guitar and drums in perfect harmony. The song tells a story of romance and love without the cheesy, cliched phrases that are so overdone. And the music doesn't maintain a boring tone; the tempo, melody, and sound in general all vary throughout the song. It's so great because it's appropriate for any situation. If you're depressed or upset, it will lighten your mood and lift your spirits. If your happy, it will make you want to sing out loud. It's truly a terrific song and I strongly recommend buying the album.
