My second One For All remote, and I love it ^ This is our second One For All remote (the first being the now-unavailable URC-6820 6 device remote). The first was sold with my old dvd/tv units at a garage sale. We lived with a substandard universal remote for more than half a year, and finally decided to get a new one. As with our last One For All universal remote, I was able to set this up to work with three very different devices in less than five minutes: a couple of years old Sony audio system, a very new Philips DVD player, and a new Haier LCD TV. Simple, inexpensive, and works... what more do you want?
Nearly perfect remote and an excellent value. ^ I purchased the URC-8820 here on Amazon to upgrade my aging URC-6131n. They are essentially the same remote save learning capabilities. I could not be happier with this product. With a little patience and research, the 8820 can do pretty much anything you would want to do. The only limits are your creativity and time investment.
The best quality of the remote is its versatility. It makes a perfect replacement remote for the novice user, or becomes a powerful tool in the hands of an advanced programmer. I tend to fall in the latter category, and the 8820 allowed a solution to the limitations of the previous model. The problem with the 6131n is ease of use by multiple members of the same household. My wife would become frustrated by having to press a complicated series of buttons to get it to do what she wanted. The (device) macro and learning capabilities of the URC-8820 consolidate these confusing sequences into one simple command. As other reviewers have stated, the device keys can actually be set as function macros, allowing you to control multiple components and commands on a single button by holding it down for two seconds. For instance, the DVD button can be set to change inputs on your TV or AVR, power on the DVD player, and even start the disc if you so choose. The learning process worked really well for me, allowing control of an iPod dock to my existing Denon AVR, Comcast DVR, Harmon Kardon DVD-player, and LG LCD TV. I did not have any trouble whatsoever finding device codes or advanced/key mover codes for these, but of course some users will not experience 100% compatibility.
The two minor flaws, overlooking back-lighting/LCD display/RF, are button labeling and the annoying FAV button, which cannot be key moved or overwritten at all. Not only is the key not useful in its intended mode (channel "surfing"), but can actually be disruptive when pressed inadvertently. The seemingly unintuitive labels of some keys is less bothersome but still unfortunate. Before doing any advanced programming on the device I created a mental "map" of what I wanted to put where, which is not a problem for me, but my wife frequently asks questions such as "why does the ENTER key change the surround sound parameter?" Even these two imperfections are not enough to warrant anything less than a 5-star review. Ergonomically the remote is well balanced and built like a tank. After nearly a year of use, my 10-month old dumped a sippy cup on the unit, rendering it useless. I took the batteries out and let the circuit board dry off. Low and behold, 30 minutes and 2 fresh batteries later, it worked perfectly! This is the only time I have changed the batteries. I will probably buy a spare in case of another such unfortunate event. For $15, how can you go wrong?
WORKS ^ This remote does what is is made for. Have it nearly 2 years now with eneloop batteries, had no problems. Its able to control all the electronic devices i have.
It feels good in my (large)hands too!!
Pleasantly surprised. ^ My primary reason to purchase a remote control was to replace the remote that came with my TV because the "Power" button on it was acting up. I don't have a ton of devices connected to my TV, so I didn't have high expectations of combining multiple remotes.
After I received this universal remote, I was able to add my TV and DVD/VCR combo player with minimal effort by using the provided codes. Even then, not every button is accounted for. That's when the learning function came into play. I was impressed with the fact that I was able to program every function that I needed from the original remotes. (This is my first time ever using a universal remote.) From there, I was praying that I could program in the remote from my Magnavox Analog-to-Digital Converter box. There is nothing in the codes for converter boxes and I could not find anything online. I tinkered with different codes to no avail. I crossed my fingers and hoped that I could program all of it via the learning function. Lo-and-behold, it worked! It's tedious, but well worth it. (Nearly everyone that purchased that particular converter box had complained about the fact that the remote did not have volumn control so you're stuck with using two remotes. Well, no longer for me!) At this point I was "learn"-happy, so I attempted to program a radio tuner from nearly 20 years ago. Dang, if it didn't work! I can only imagine the endless possibilities of this remote.
I'm very happy to have gotten more out of it than I had anticipated. I just hope this remote lasts for some time. :)
Excellent and inexpensive ^ Supports a large number of devices right out of the box, and is programmable for extra buttons/features. Works great with Tivo, old DVD player, new Sony receiver (both AV1 and AV2 command modes). All in all, awesome.
