Editorial Comments

Album Description:
Picking up where the debut album "Dap Dippin" left off, this highly anticipated album from soul chanteuse Sharon Jones and her incredible band The Dap Kings, features 11 tracks of pure, smokey soul and funk.

Amazon.com:
Sometimes it takes a Sharon Jones to remind us that being a great performer is not necessarily the same as being a great Gap model, and vice versa. To believe the hype, exterior aesthetics kept this soul/funk singer from getting the recognition she deserved early in her career. Now she’s pushing 50, but Naturally (Jones’ second full-length album with the Dap-Kings) proves that she can still sing circles around just about anything in hot pants.

When it comes to running down the great songs on this CD, it’s hard to know where to begin. "How Long Do I have to Wait for You" is as smooth and winning as the irresistible lovers Jones sings about on many of these tracks. Most of the material deals with matters of the heart, although Jones’ rendition of Woody Guthrie’s "This Land is Your Land" reveals her political side. (In live performances Jones goes even further, singing a plan to stop paying taxes.) "Stranded in Your Love" is like a warm-weather version of "Baby It’s Cold Outside." And the big romantic finish on this album, "All Over Again" must immediately be taken up as the new, must-play, wedding dance song. Naturally is a gift to R&B and should help the genre win new fans--with an album this infectious, you’d have to be made of stone to resist the funk. --Leah Weathersby

5 out of 5 starsYou need to hear her version of "This Land is Your Land"
New singer, climbed her way to the national scene late in life. She was working until recently as a security guard or something, but man has she got talent. The fact that she wasn't discovered until recently is an indictment against the record industry and their disproportionate interest in the "look" of singers. No, she's not pretty in the Britney Spears/Paris Hilton kind of way, but she has a simply gorgeous voice which she uses to sing R and B with a lot of funk and soul. If you like the old Motown sounds, or 70s funk, and who doesn't by the way, you can't help but love this CD. It's not just her remarkable talents, her band includes an excellent horn section, an impressive rhythm section, and a monster of a bass player who seems to be the band leader. Get this CD, check out the Daptone label for other funky soul r and b CD's you should have, and next chance you can, see the DapKings live. You ever noticed how race, ethnicity, age, nationality, social class, and sometimes even gender and sexual orienation segregates music audiences? Well it's the opposite with the old Motown sound, you start playing that stuff to just about any crowd and people start dancing and singing along. Same thing with this Sharon Jones stuff, in concert, they get an pretty diverse crowd of fans.

5 out of 5 starsA return to 60's&70's soul
As a longtime collector of 60's and 70's soul music, this compilation gives me hope that some artists and performers are still refusing to let
this style of music disappear.
This is serious bare bones, back to basics stuff.
The funk drives hard and the soul is sweet and danceable.
I love this stuff.

5 out of 5 starsI LOVE IT !!!!
The fella from Leeds whose review is posted as the first one says it all. I just wanted to say how much i LOVE this excellent album and how i can't stop listening to it!!!! It's everything you want from music! It's just sheer joy and satisfaction of listening to a great tune and real musicians whose love for the music they're making shine through.

I love all the songs on it. My most favorites are My Man Is A Mean Man and Your Thing Is A Drag. I'm so happy i discovered great Ms.Jones and her equally great band! Do yourself a favor and check this out. I'm sure you'll end up buying it!!!

4 out of 5 starsGimme an "S"! For SOUL.
Sometimes I think I'm the only person under 30 who really knows what soul is. But I had the very fortunate experience of seeing Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings live recently and half of the faces in the audience were as young if not younger than mine. Sharon dances without choreography and the Dap Kings jammed without synthesizers. This is music the way it was meant to be. The revolution might not be televised, but it will be on stage, sold on Amazon, and headquartered in Brooklyn.

5 out of 5 starsSharon Jones acts natural...
I love Sharon Jones! Her voice oozes soul and sass, and the Dap Kings back her with a groove that makes it impossible to stay still once you hear it. This is their second CD, and contains more ballad oriented material than their hard hitting first disc, "Dap Dippin". However, this disc is not lacking in grooves. "How Long Do I Have To Wait For You?" is so catchy its addictive. I have played this song so many times its not even funny. "This Land Is Your Land" is a VERY creative cover of the Woody Guthrie standard. Its a far cry from the original version! Also noteworthy is Sharon Jones' put down of a lover on "Your Thing Is A Drag". The band really lays down a groove on this one and Sharon Jones' vocals get the guy GOOD. If you liked the first album by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, you should definitely pick this one up, they continue to be the best funk band around.
