Amazon.com: Based on a comic by Kiyohiko Azuma, Azumanga Daioh is the anime equivalent of a '50s girls' novel. Ten-year-old prodigy Chiyo and transfer student Osaka join the crowd at a Tokyo high school, adding to the comic misadventures. Their hard-drinking, potty-mouthed English teacher Yukari resents the popularity of the saner gym teacher Nyamo, even though they’re old friends and former classmates. Azumanga lacks any sort of sustained storyline or character development; it's just a series of incidents and encounters involving the kids and the two teachers. The only recurring male character is the leering Mr. Kimura, who teaches because he likes to ogle the students. Adolescent girls may enjoy sharing the featherweight daily problems of Tomo, Yomi, Sakaki, Kaorin, Chihiro, Chiyo, and Osaka, but Azumanga Daioh isn't really about anything. (Rated 13 and older: profanity, alcohol use, minor risqué humor) --Charles Solomon
Great seires if you need a good laugh! First off this series storyline is almost non existent. Which is an ok thing, it's based off Japanese high school girls daily lives. With different things happening each episode. Now in my opinion they went about this the right way, people that disagree well maybe you aren't seeing it correctly. In your school lives you just hang out with your friends have some good laughs and do other random stuff, and this series captures that perfectly.
The laughs in this are in great numbers, you will often find yourself chuckling at things you wouldn't expect, and some things that are just plan funny altogether. Now the anime itself is geared towards upper middle school and high school kids, while most younger audience won't find the series that entertaining. Adults that are in college or fresh out of it may also find this humorous because some of the ideas in this are things that happen in everyday life that you and your friends often might do.
Now while some people say it's more of a girl anime that is true, but boys can also find it amusing if they have an open mind about things. Now the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it starts off a little slow, but by the end of the first disc you won't wanna stop watching. The ending is sad seeing some of your favorite characters going off screen, but by buying the boxset you can always just start watching again.
I highly recommend this anime to any anime lover that is into comedic anime or just an all around anime fan.
One of the best I ever watched This DVD is an introduction to a well hidden and often over looked gem. Azumanga Daioh is one of my top 5 favorite anime. Up there with Eva, Fullmetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin and Zeta Gundam. All of which are heavy hitters. While its true that it may be a show about nothing in particular, it's still entertaining in the same way watching a Charlie Brown special is entertaining. Random things pop up in the characters' lives, and fun and emotion follow.
This show is about the lives of 5 (or 6) school girls and their very entertaining and weird teachers. It's a light-hearted and crazy ride that anyone who's been in school can relate to at some point. To enjoy this series all you need to do is just sit back, relax and wait for the laughs to come right up and hit you in the face! One of the most enjoyable shows I've ever watched. And it truly shows what anime can be, for everyone.
found the right anime if you like high school anime with humor you found the right anime. azumanga daioh is very funny for a high school anime the ones i often see are often full of action. azumanga daioh comine humor+weridness+little horrer+daily lives. my favorite epasodes were 4,5,6,and 7 in the anime. i alway wanted to have a cluture fest in america since i saw this. tomo is my favorite charictar in the series due to her hyperness and energetic attatude. the only downside to this is the often dirty theacher mr. kimera when he says, ask, and does thing praverted. some crude humor sometimes and a cencored vomiting since also are the downsides. witch is why i give this a 4 out of 5
extraordinary No Gordian knot hairstyles, no yards of colorful ribbons (except for a passing image in one character's mind), no mechanical beasts rampaging about and destroying all in the path (except for Yukari's car), and no red, green, pink or blue eyes (although Yukari's eyes do glow red just before she thrashes Tomo for a mishap). If you are the sort of person who can appreciate the quiet humor and horror to be found in daily life then you may love following the girls of Azumanga Daioh as they move through their high school years. You get to know the characters very well in a short time and as a result you are already smiling when Osaka kicks her shoe off to forecast the weather because you know that something is going to happen. Life is just never going to be that simple for Osaka. These characters are so well drawn that I find it easy to believe countless school girls in Japan are living out some variation of Azumanga Daioh. The girls of the series are not perfect nor cool. They are not particularly special, and yet they are. For me, one of the appealing qualities of this series is how it takes the ordinary and ends up with something wonderful and wildly funny. Something you may wish to know: I try to avoid learning anymore than is necessary to make a decision about watching an anime which has caught my attention. Therefore, I was aware that Kaorin, one of the minor female characters, was attracted to Sakaki, the quiet athletic girl, although I had no idea where wishful thinking by fans ended and reality began. I refer to Kaorin as a minor character because she has relatively little screen time, although her moments, and particularly one involving a folk dance, are extremely amusing. The same -sex attraction is not a decisive factor to me one way or another. However, some people may find that sort of thing objectionable, and they have every right to their opinion. For those people I would like to point out that Azumanga Daioh is not about romance, and it is most certainly not about sex. Don't let the overheated fantasies and imaginations of fans in forums scare you away. If a same -sex crush is the only thing stopping you from watching this show just remember how swimmingly your own high school crushes went. Another thing: there are some depictions of alcohol use by the teachers. Who would have thought that adult teachers drink? In one scene the teacher Nyamo learns that drinking can lead to way too much sharing of personal information with the students.I love it that the Japanese don't gloss over such things. Of course there is precious little they gloss over but that is another story : ) The students are never depicted using alcohol,by the way. I don't think of this as a kid's show. Or rather, I assume I'm not the only guy over thirty who laughed at such moments as Tomo (my favorite character) discovering how little she really knows about reindeer. In another incident Tomo has a monstrous internal choice to make: does she take a tiny step into adulthood or just do what her entire nature begs of her? As insignifigant as it was, I found it quite memorable. And I sort of despise myself for laughing at Tomo deliberately and sadistically missing Chiyo over and over again with the volleyball after all of Chiyo's team have been hit and she is the only one left. To avoid confusion, please keep in mind my review applies to the entire series, including this dvd.
Theatre of the Absurd? Superficially, this is a kids' show about a group of high school girls and the issues they face in their everyday lives. Yeah, it doesn't sound like a very promising premise, does it?
Yet, as I sat and watched these first episodes I was more and more surprised. Azumanga Daioh is one crazy show - almost a send-up of itself (the tongue is planted so far into the cheek)!
The humour, and there is plenty of it, is almost Monty Pythonesque in it's absurdity and surrealism. I can't really describe Azumanga Daioh to you, you just have to see it for yourself. It is a TV show that defies description.
The school girls and teachers are real "characters" from: the crazy (and I mean NUTS here) and hyperactive Tomo; to Osaka ("Get it together! Get it together!") from Osaka; to the terminally cute and gifted Chiyo-chan ("don't pick on the little brat just because she's smart for her age" - advises Miss Yukari) and on to the young school teacher, Miss Yukari, herself, who enjoys gambling, getting drunk and bragging about her body.
The show is very well voiced in English by an American team who seemed to have had an enormous amount of fun with the whole thing. The theme song is sung in Japanese with English subtitles and it is totally absurd, in keeping with the general tone of the show.
Marvellous, surreal and, at times, amazing hokum and it always brings a smile to my face when I watch it and a few laughs, too.
If you enjoy the sound of cake! Then Azumanga Daioh may be for you.
