Editorial Comments

Description:
In 1977, an independent documentary movie shone a light on the world of bodybuilding, becoming a huge box office hit and creating an international sensation. It launched one man's multi-million dollar career and changed the world of bodybuilding and physical exercise forever: PUMPING IRON. Starring five-time Mr. Olympia, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie followed the 28-year old bodybuilder as he competed for his 6th title.

Amazon.com essential video:
Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents' values with the press, and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long before he decided to run for governor of California, in 1977's hit documentary, Pumping Iron. Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Arnold's competitive trail but much less interesting), Schwarzenegger still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others' psychological weaknesses. The film still feels redundant (there's only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas--the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes--are compelling. Complete with a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film's bodybuilders and director. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 starsClassic...
Classic film for anybody interested in the origins of bodybuilding. I've owned the VHS for years so getting the DVD was a must. The additional contents of the DVD alone make it worth the cost of admission! Highly recommend...

5 out of 5 starsInspiration
There are other reviews detailing summaries of this incredible documentary and the mind games and raw emotion in the film. I am going to write that anyone who weight trains, a few days a week as a hobby to split training 6 days a week as a job, this movie is a must have. After watching a few minutes of some of the greatest, most well known bodybuilders of the 70's, you will want to literally pull your car out of its parking spot (like Franco Columbu in this movie) and head straight for the gym. On those "lazy" days that everyone has, when I don't really "feel" like going to the gym or giving it my all, I throw this in and slap the lazy out of myself.

This is a great documentary about the sport and the personalities that helped make it. It shows Arnold's charisma and not that he is a dumb ox, or Oak rather. But if I had to sum up how I felt about this movie in one word, it would be Inspiration.

5 out of 5 starsArnold is numero uno!
This is a must for every true Arnold fan! Spend the time and watch all the extras on this DVD, also. You will love it all! FYI: you can find replicas of the shirt Arnold wears at the end that says "ARNOLD IS NUMERO UNO" online. I got mine at Spreadshirt, or you can just google the phrase and see all the websites that pop up. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 starsGreat for BodyBuilders
I bought this DVD to learn from it and did. It shows different ways you can lift if you watch closely and it's always good to know how someone can become the big man in the weight room. I also learn the (pump) from this and has helped A LOT.

4 out of 5 starsPumping Iron
This DVD is very well done and should be a must for every Bodybuilders aspiring to receive recognition in Bodybuilding circles. Ray Maher
