Product Description: The One For All A/V LCD 8-Device With Learning Universal Remote Control (URC-8910) is a high-performance universal remote control. It is designed to operate up to eight home entertainment devices, including TV, video, and audio components. Moreover, this remote control contains sophisticated technology that will allow you to conveniently consolidate the clutter of all of the original remote controls used in your home entertainment system.
It's OK ^ The remote has a lot of built in codes, and worked well, but I stopped using it when I got Harmony 659.
Unfortunately, this remote is very bulky and has little memory, which limits the learning function severely. It can be programmed over the phone, but I have not tried that option. I think, more memory for learning IR codes would make it a better product, but after trying Harmony, I am not going back to this remote.
Impressive Universal Remote ^ I've had a remote like this for years. Just goes to show how well designed it is. I appreciate its ability to use the same keys for the same functions between different devices. I can control the volume on the tv no matter if I'm on satellite controls or dvd. It can control 8 different items and has more buttons then you can shake a stick at. Even if it doesn't have a button you need (open/close on the dvd player for example) it has buttons that can be programmed to become that button. The preprogrammed codes work for the most part, but if what you're looking for isn't there, the remote can be upgraded over the phone. It isn't the most svelte control I've used, but its comfortable enough. Great remote but you have to be patient to be able to program it so it can do what you want it to do
great when it works, but good luck updating ^ Updating this is impossible, so good luck if you have a blu-ray player, hdtv, or other device bought in the last couple of years.
In theory, you call a number in the manual or the website, and the customer service person walks you through updating the software in your remote. You hold the remote to the phone, a sequence of sounds is played, and you can enter in new/updated codes.
In actuality, the phone number in both the manual and the website are not in service. I found a new one (800-315-0990) only by finding a review here on amazon that included it. The person then takes some information, and emails you a .mime document that points to a website where you can play the sounds on your computer. If your computer speakers aren't all that great, you're out of luck.
Also, the microphone that is supposed to pick up these sounds is secured to the circuit board only with a cheap and brittle glue. If the remote gets dropped onto the floor, the glue breaks and rattles around inside your remote. The cheapness causes the microphone to not be connected to the circuit board anymore, so even if you can jump through the hoops THAT ARE NOT IN THE MANUAL OR THE COMPANY'S WEBSITE, you still can't update it.
If your device is not new, it works o.k. The learning function works, but there should already be buttons for things like "eject" for vhs/dvd/cd/etc. -- a serious oversight. The device itself is old -- and cheap -- technology. You can get a much better remote for the price.
CUSTOMER SUPPORT NONEXISTENT ^ I don't know if a FOOL would buy a product from a company that has no support. I tried 330-405-8616 for 35 days--inoperative. I sent emails through the One-4-All website--no response. I was shunted among several Audiovox corporate phone queues--62 minutes worth of "Your call is very important to us." I don't know if a FOOL would buy a product from a company that does not support its products.
Fantastic Remote ^ I bought this remote a year ago, and couldn't be happier with it. It controls our Magnavox TV, Panasonic VCR, Philips DVD player, and even our ancient JVC shelf-top stereo.
The fabulous thing is that it's so upgradable. When I bought it, digital TV tuner boxes hadn't come out yet. But when I called the company upon purchasing the Zenith digital TV converter box in June, I just held the remote up to the earpiece of the phone and they were able to update its programming on the spot. So now it controls the DTV converter, too!
Please buy a remote from One For All. They deserve to stay in business for making such a good product.
