The real sequel to me The military plan on using the trioxin to turn the undead into controllable weapons. During their testing, Curt Reynolds(J. Trevor Edmond) and his girl Julie Walker(Mindy Clarke) sneak a peek. When she's accidently killed. Curt decides to use the trioxin on her.
I loved the first ROTLD and despised the second with all of my soul. So, I put this sequel off for a very long time and I do regret doing that. ROTLD 3 is a pretty good zombie flick that focuses on the horror and the comedy is pretty tame.
First I'll give credit where it's due. There is a large amount of suspense concerning the girl. The writing is pretty good keeping you in the dark. There's always a chance the chick is going to freak out and devour her man. The kills are also good with some nice gore. The flick moved at a real good pace and was never boring.
The biggest gripe that I have with this movie is the main character Curt. He comes across as a complete moron. I won't give an example because I don't like spoilers. But I could never relate to his actions. So I'll leave it that.
In any case, I find this to be a very good sequel. Especially since I hated the second so much. I recommend this to diehard zombie fans. If you loved the first two. Then why not check it out?

In a California town at a military chemical warfare base, a deadly experiment involving the Trioxen gas from "Return of the Living Dead 1 & 2" as it brings the dead back to ghastly life as they crave human brains and Col. Reynolds (Kent McCord) wants to keep them under control. His son Curt (J. Trevor Edmond) and girlfriend Julie (Melinda Clarke) sneek in the base to see what experiments they are conducting and are outstanded. Later when Col. Reynolds and his son goes through a disagreement, Curt runs away with his girlfriend but when a tragic accident on the motorcycle occurs thus leaving Curt alive while Julie dead, he is so grief-struck that he wants her to be alive again. He sneeks into the military base where he uses the gas to bring her back from the dead as it makes him happy, unfortunately what he doesn't realize that the Julie that has comes back isn't herself when she starts to act strange as they both deal with gang members and the army who wants them.
A grisly and terrific sequel to the brilliant 1985 horror-comedy classic "Return of the Living Dead" that manages to improve over part 2 by making it a completely different entry. This one is directed by Brian Yuzna of "Re-Animator" fame and co-stars Sarah Douglas ("Superman 2") and playboy playmate Pia Reyes, the story is well-put and crafted that makes this a Romeo-and-Juliet love story, a dark comedy and a zombie movie into one movie. This film is loaded with graphic gore, brain-eating and also some S&M style imagery of self-mutilation with excellent make-up effects by Steve Johnson, the acting isn't too shabby and this movie is a spectacular splatter-fest that makes it a winner in my books.
This DVD contains a great transfer on sound and picture but doesn't offer the uncut version with a few scenes of graphic gore cut out but that's ok and has two audio commentaries with trailers to this and other TriMark releases.

The best sequel of the series, 3.5 stars After the disappointment that was Return of the Living Dead Part 2, the series manages to make a step in the right direction with Return of the Living Dead 3 in the 90's. Directing this installment was Brian Yuzna who gave us quality flicks such as Bride of ReAnimator and produced classics such as ReAnimator and From Beyond. While this chapter takes a departure from the horror/comedy feel that we saw in the first two, it really stands quite well on its own and boasts an interesting storyline despite the title suggesting another by-the-numbers zombie romp.
After sneaking into the military base where his father works, Curt and his girlfriend Julie bear witness to an experiment utilizing the 2-4-5 Trioxin to reanimate a corpse, with horrific results of course. It seems that the military is trying to use the chemical to create unstoppable solidiers out of the zombies it creates, but to no avail. Being a military man, dad comes home and announces that the time has come to move again, but Curt refuses to accompany him and leave Julie behind. When the young couple make a quick getaway on a motorcycle, a crash leaves Julie fatally wounded. However, Curt remembers the Trioxin they saw earlier that brought life back to the dead, and as you could guess he breaks into the military base and reanimates his girlfriend's corpse.
Other than a strange persistent hunger, Julie seems to have been successfuly restored. However as they continue their journey evading the police, Curt's dad, and a gang, it's apparent that Julie is gradually being overcome by the urges to feast upon human flesh...and self mutilate. As her behavior quickly spirals out of control, Curt must make the difficult decision every young man must make at some time in his life: Should he let his flesh eating zombie girlfriend run rampant, or put a stop to it before it gets out of hand?
Overall, Yuzna made a very decent zombie flick here with the third installment in the Return of the Living Dead series. It's a Romeo and Juliet story living dead style, which isn't exactly a concept that's been done to death and it works splendidly in this case. The only thing I didn't care for in this movie was the gore effects. Although the gore is plentiful, the prosthetics are very fake looking especially for 1993. The effort is there, but most of the stuff just looks plain bad and unconvincing. Not the stuff dreams are made of, but it is a very solid zombie flick and I felt it was the best since the original. If you watch any of the sequels, make it this one.
Great 90's Horror! This is a great, often overlooked 90's straight to video horror/zombie movie. Far better than the 2nd ROTLD, and not nearly as good as the 1st, but this stands by itself as a different direction than the 1st and 2nd. The Unrated version will give you more splat, and I'd recommend it over the R version any day. The final 15 or so minutes of this movie really kick, there's not many zombies until the end, but it is definetly watchable and has some good gore scenes. I'd say my main complaint is that the zombies look more like weird monsters than regular zombies, but they still do the trick. To me, this movie was one of the movies form the last class of great horror movies from the 80s and early/mid 90's like DEAD ALIVE and such before horror really went in the toilet at the end of the 90's through today (see the 4th and 5th ROTLD movies for proof.... or better yet... don't).
