Amazon.com: Claustrophobia and bloody mayhem collide in the high-adrenaline horror flick The Descent. Six women (including one who lost her husband and child the year before, and one who harbors a bitter secret) spelunk in an unexplored cavern system that turns out to harbor mysterious, predatory creatures. That sums up the story, but--as with writer-director Neil Marshall's previous low-concept movie, Dog Soldiers--the plot doesn't begin to describe the riveting, stomach-lurching thrills this movie provides. The script affords the relatively unknown cast (led by Shauna Macdonald and Natalie Mendoza, both excellent) just enough room to make their characters distinct and genuine, so that when they're dropped into utmost peril our empathy is engaged as much as our fear. The dynamic direction and editing make the cavern a palpable, physical presence, even before the creepy beasts crawl out of their nooks. This is not a movie for everyone; it is extremely gruesome and will induce panic attacks in anyone with even a mild fear of closed spaces. But for anyone seeking something smarter, faster, and more wrenching than static torture-fests like Saw or Hostel, The Descent will draw you into its unsettling ooze. --Bret Fetzer
Scary, deeply thoughtful, and wonderfully acted. Mini review. I'm basically writing it to give this movie another 5 star vote.
This is a great film. It is off the Hollywood grid and that makes for a very gritty, down and dirty feel-- the opposite of the slick junk American studios turn out.
The characters are really well written and acted. It is a treat to see a film starring all females-- adult, fully developed, strong females, who never mention shopping.
The story has a lot to say about human nature. It also happens to be incredibly visceral, terrifying, and horrifying. I would have been scared and filled with dread if they had just stuck to getting trapped in a cave. But then the things that live in the cave came out. I was pulling the covers up to my nose and screaming like a sissy. This movie is not for the fain of heart. I think my mother would quite literally die from fear if she saw this. Awesome.
Good price for a somewhat good movie. I enjoyed it the first time. Second time around, I started to realize how crazy the story was. The product is exactly as advertised.
Creepy Cave Trips Are Never a Good Idea This movie is scary. This group of women thinks it is fun to go on annual adventure trips. I prefer a nice hotel on the beach, but creepy crawly caves sound better to them. You really get to know the characters and care about them and the things they have been through. It is their trip to the caves and what they go through there that will terrify you. If you are claustrophobic, you will definitely be freaked out by this movie. I love a good scary movie, which may be why I am an insomniac, and this movie is well written and acted and will give you the creeps. I highly recommend it. Power Path to Love
Good suspense is back! Really a bit of a sleeper. Not a ton of press but a great ride none the less. The Blu-ray is a visual improvement over the DVD.
So scary.... This is a great, unusual movie about 6 women who enjoy all types of adventure trips. Sarah, the main charcter, lost her family in a terrble accident and this is her first trip since.
The women are all great, and have real character and background. Just as in reality, there's alot under the surface between these women's relantionship.
The go caving, and from there the horror starts. What's real and what isn't gets blurred, and bad secrets get exposed.
Somethin starts attacking the women, but I don't want to spoil it for you. The actresses aren't big names yet, but they are all good at acting. The scenery, special effects, etc. pull this togeher an make it possible, which makes it horrifiyin to me.
