Editorial Comments

Amazon.com:
The premise of Wicked City has been used in a number of other anime features, including Legend of the Overfiend: Earth is linked to a parallel world of demons, whose inhabitants can cross the barrier separating the planets. Dashing Taki Renzaburo, a secret agent assigned to handle invaders from the "Black World," finds himself partnered with Makie, a gorgeous Black World woman. Their assignment: to protect Giuseppe Mayart, a bigwig coming to Tokyo to sign a 500-year peace treaty between the worlds. Mayart, who typifies the sniggering, diminutive lechers who often turn up in anime, hardly seems to warrant all this bother. Protecting him draws Taki and Makie into a series of exceedingly violent encounters with "radicals" from the Black World who oppose the treaty, including their shape-shifting, unkillable leader and a spider-woman with fanged genitalia. Blood and gore fly amid scenes of rape, torture, shootings, slashings, and exploding bodies. Yoshiaki Kawajiri directs skillfully, although the simian Mayart never blends into the realistic world of the film. Wicked City was a landmark work when it was released in 1987, and it retains a cult following. But many subsequent features--notably Mamoru Oshii's darkly brilliant Ghost in the Shell--have eclipsed it. Not rated; suitable for ages 18 and up for nudity, sexual situations, profanity, rape, violence, grotesque imagery, and violence against women. --Charles Solomon

Description:
When Desire Turns Deadly, There's No Place to Hide...

For centuries, a secret peace treaty has existed between Earth and the Black World, a parallel dimension populated by shape-changers possessing awesome supernatural powers. But now, that pact is up for renewal and a militant faction from the Black World plans to do everything in their power to stop the treaty from being signed. The fate of the world now rests in the ability of a pair of special agents, one human, the other a shape-changer from the distaff dimension, to make sure things go according to plan.

In WICKED CITY, director, Yoshiaki Kawajiri blends stylish eroticism, graphic horror and pulse-pounding action in such a way that it is easy to forget that it's only a cartoon.

Not Rated: Contains violence, nudity and sexual situations. Parental discretion advised.

4 out of 5 starsWickedly cool anime feature!
In a world of humans which we live in and a dimension called The Black World run by bizarre shape-shifting beings whom have been secretly living with each other's sides for a thousand years. There has been peace between the two worlds yet it has been broken as a group of shapeshifting cretins called The Radicals from the opposite side start to make bizarre murders, there has been an assigned treaty for inter-dimensional peace between both worlds yet The Radicals wants to prevent that from happening. Top agent Taki whom happens to be your basic human agent is joined with beautiul black world agent Makie who can make amazing laser-like claws at will for weapons have a duty to protect a 200 year old peacekeeper named Giuseppi Mayart from assassins. Only one problem, Mayart is just a stubborn old sex crazed dude and he is the only one that can make peace between both worlds but how can can both Makie and Taki protect this man from the Radicals?

Bizarre and exciting 1987 Japanese animated horror/sci-fi/fantasy flick from the director of "Ninja Scroll" known as Yoshiaki Kawajiri is one of the most unusual and overlooked anime movies around. The animation is very good, the storyline is kind of complicated and is loaded with nudity, sex, gory violence and some humor as well. Makie is simply a gorgeous anime character guaranteed to arouse some anime fanboys, it's nowhere as excellent as Kawajiri's "Ninja Scroll" or "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" for that matter but it's still an enjoyable and nasty bit of Japanese animation.

This DVD has good picture and sound quuality with both English language and Japanese language with English Subtitle audio. The extras include trailers to this and other Urban Vision anime, biographies of the characters, interview with the director and Weblink.

Also recommended: "Ninja Scroll", "Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend", "Ichi The Killer", "Akira", "Ghost in The Shell", "The Professional: Golgo 13", "Grindhouse", "Kite", "Lifeforce", "From Dusk Till Dawn", "Vampire Hunter D", "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust", "Fist of the North Star", "X The Movie", "Sin City", "Re-Animator", "The X-Files: Fight the Future", "Men in Black", "Heavy Metal" and "Perfect Blue".

5 out of 5 starsWicked City --- It's totally wicked!!!!!!!
This anime is great. I first saw it on pay-per-view years ago and got the vhs format. I finally upgraded my colletion & all I needed was "Wicked City". Now it is complete. It is worth the $$$$$$. Go see it. This is "NOT" a kids moive.

3 out of 5 starsInteresting Chapter In the Development of Anime
I was surprised when I found out about this movie. I hadn't realized the director of Ninja Scroll had any other credits involving animated movies previous to Ninja Scroll.

The storyline is reasonably engaging. I watched it in Japanese with English subtitles, since bad dubbing or voice-acting can ruin a movie for me. I must admit that the animation is a bit primitive by today's standards--even when compared only to cell-drawn animation--but it wasn't really a big enough problem to detract from the movie. There are a few instances in which presumably contemporary (to the movie's production) pop music intrudes upon the soundtrack; the music sounds dated and awkward in such a context but it only happens two or three times and fortunately only lasts thirty seconds or so. The movie does suffer somewhat from some of the common problems found in anime such as ambiguous plot and vague action scenes and resolution. Despite these minor flaws, I think this movie was definitely worth watching.

2 out of 5 starsThe city is wicked... and horny as he11 too.
I first saw Wicked City about 13 years ago if that. I didn't like it then but I forgot the reason why I did. I bought it recently but my dislike isn't as great.

Wicked City has a decent story. The plot is alright, character development isn't too bad but the soundtrack is pretty bad. And not in a good way either. The story is; another world inhabited by demons exist parallel with our world. Due to an ancient pact. There is a peace treaty between the worlds which keeps everyone at peace. Now the treaty is almost over and its time to renew it. To do this a certain man must be protected until the new treaty is done. The main characters which are male and female represent both worlds and are ordered to protect this man. However things go wrong and a new twist is added. They add a secondary main character which is the man who must be protected. He adds some comedy relief and it does pay off. Some of his antics and his dialogue is pretty funny.

The action scenes are alright. And the anime has some interesting villians. The level of exoticness pushes the envelop and for some may go too far. One of the characters is a female spider who spins webs from her front lower region and she's nude on each of her appearances. Also to include there are a few rape scenes and sex scenes. But the rape scenes can truly be disturbing because of the length.

I found this anime somewhat ok all the way until the ending and the final battle. I wont say this anime is highly recommended. Get it only if you have the spare cash, can find it cheap or if your not bothered by certain things. This anime isn't for kids or people who find rape scenes of any type(visible or not) very disturbing.
