Amazon.com Product Description: The Escort SmartCord for Passport 7500 and 6800 models features a power-on indicator, an alert lamp that warns you of radar and laser, and a convenient mute button on the lighter plug. It's the perfect addition for any car when reaching the detector's mute button on the windshield is a stretch. At night, put the detector in dark mode and use the SmartCord for alerts. Other drivers won't know you have a detector. SmartCords are compatible only with the Passport 7500 and 6800 detectors.
Uhm, it's a power cord. Yeah, it's damn cool and everything - what with the indicator lights and stuff - but it's still just a power cord. How much do you need really to read a review about it?
Remote Mute Button: Well Worth the Price From what I've read, Passport pushes this Smartcord for two reasons: one, it lets you run your Radar Detector in dark mode, and two, it allows you to mute your detector without stretching over to the windshield. Let me stress the latter. It lets you mute your detector without reaching over to the windshield.
Amazon is selling the Smartcord at half off the list price. The mute button on the cord plug is well worth the price for its convenience. Without the Smartcord, I would have to wait about 3-4 seconds for automute to kick in and lessen the annoying x-band beeps that pop up every few blocks in city driving. This is especially annoying when you have passengers in the car and your conversations are interrupted (my gf has very sensitive ears and practically whimpers at the sound). With the Smartcord, I simply take my right hand off the wheel and press the remote mute button without even taking my eyes off the road. This is a much easier skill to learn than learning to lean over to the detector itself and pressing its mute button while keeping both eyes ahead.
I could give a flip about the dark mode feature, because I am too reliant on the detector's expert mode for visual data on radar signals, and dark mode means you will get absolutely no visuals. I would only recommend buying this product for muting convenience (and only while it is on sale), and not for someone who wishes to start using dark mode.
