Friendly Persuasion - Friendly Movie ^ Friendly Persuasion has long been one of my favorite movies. It is one of those rare pictures where each scene is a gem in itself, while adding to the film as a whole. Of course, Gary Cooper is outstanding in this, one of his best roles. But that is only the begining. Dorthy McGuire, as his wife, and a minister to their Quaker community, provides an equaly outstanding performance. Richard Eyer, as their younger son, provides humor and warmth. Phyllis Love is outstanding in the role of their marriagable daughter, who falls in love with their neighbors son, who is an officer in the union army, providing a wonderful, warm, romantic touch. And Anthony Perkins plays their older son, torn between his family's beliefs and his duty to protect that family. this may be his best role ever. Besides the great cast, and there are many other wonderful performances in this movie, the setting is ideal. No hollywood cardboard sets! There are buggy races, Civil War action, a raid on the farm by Confederates, and enough romance, comedy, action, and drama for me.
A movie that does your heart good! ^ This is a warm, heart-felt movie. A realistic family during the Civil War time coming to terms with who they are as relates to their faith, their life, the war, each other, the lives around them. Watching their internal struggling with and through it all. NONE of this is done in a maudelin or preachy way - it's just like you're getting to be a part of some people's lives for a few moments. Shares a real message of being true to who you are in yourself, while at the same time respecting other persons for who they are. Warm and thought provoking - with LOTS of humor throughout - subtle humor. (Like you're "on the inside" -privvy to the private bantering and nuances between persons.)
I'm not one to own movies myself. But this is one I have!
DVD of "Friendly Persuasion" ^ The item shipped promptly, arrived in plenty of time for Christmas and was packaged well so that it appeared in new condition when it arrived. Since it was a Christmas gift, I did not open the packaging that it was wrapped in, and cannot verify that it was in good working order, but it seemed to be, from the outward appearances.
best of the best ^ This is one of the best movies Gary Cooper made, aside from High Noon, & Friendly Persuasion gives you laughter as well as serious moments. Being Quakers during the Civil War, there is a major moral dilemma in their lives, but there is still life going on - all of it acted with full skill and charm by everyone in the movie. A pleasure to see how good an actor Anthony Perkins can be, struggling with his need to do his part in the war, I'm almost sorry he got side tracked into horror. And of course Dorothy McGuire is always a pleasure. Rent it or buy it, if you like this genre you won't be disappointed.
