One chestnut that won't go away is the image of the feverish screenwriter, hunched over a word processor, ideas flying so thick and fast that the chore of punctuation would invite creative disaster. Hollywood Screenwriter is a script-writing program that promises to simplify the mundane stuff--like proper script formatting--so creative juices can flow freely.
The only keys a writer needs to move between script elements in this program are TAB, ENTER, and (. Since scripts have a logic and order that's fairly standardized, the program can intuit what's next, placing time of day after scene headings or formatting for dialogue or a parenthetical after a character's name. This is a less-complicated program than some of the more expensive screenwriting programs out there, but it doesn't do as much as those other offerings either.
Hollywood Screenwriter is designed for writing spec scripts: speculative screenplays designed to get the attention of stage or screen producers. This program will help you format your script correctly, ensuring that it won't get tossed out based on appearance. But if someone decides to produce your masterpiece, you won't be able to make a production script with this program. Then again, if that happens, you might feel flush enough to go buy one of those spendy programs that does A and B pages.
No other place clings to dated stereotypes of how things are done quite like Hollywood does. Included in Hollywood Screenwriter's instruction manual are painstakingly detailed instructions on how to assemble a script correctly. Unless you're producing a blockbuster, this is what you need! This program is great. The process of writing a screenplay was sped up by the drop down devices employed by this software. It's really easy to use and upload. Yes, you have to leave the disc in your drive in order to use it, but who cares? If all you want is a script that will print onto plain white paper (spell check included), you've found what you need at a very low cost. I was tempted to pay over $100 for the other programs, but decided to stick with this one. All I wanted was a script, and that's what I got from this software. 5 stars!!!!
Not Worth the Time or Money Hollywood Screenwriter is not worth the time nor the money; it is designed for the amateur who wants to get "something" on paper, not a professional who not only wants to get something on paper, but wants that something to be the best he/she can create...and then be able to have it work with other elements of filmmaking including Scheduling, Full Production Breakdown Reports, Industry Standard Revision Draft Colors, Rundown Sheets, Budgeting, and Storyboard Linking.
Of what use to the film industry is a program that limits how producers, directors, other writers and production members can use a script, such as that produced with Hollywood Screenwriter? It makes no sense to have to re-type a script using other software that is Industry Standard. Why not just buy a professional program and use it, from the beginning.
I recommend Movie Magic Screenwriter, which formats for--among other types--films, stage plays, telvision producutions, multi-media productions and animations...and also meets Industry Standards for working with various elements of productions. It also imports and converts scripts written in Word, WordPerfect and other formats; so there is no need to retype a script.
A writer who wants to be thought of as a professional should use professional writing tools.
Well worth the price. Although it doesn't come with much of a manual, it will get my screenplay "down on paper". No software will make me a better writer but, if you just need something to do the formatting as you write, this is it. You can learn how to use it in about 10 minutes, and it doesn't cost a bundle.
Not Worth The Aggravation! Please, please, please, do yourself a big favor and save your pennies, stand on the street corner if you have to and take donations and buy Final Draft. Sometimes when you pay less you don't get a bargain, you get a lot of headaches which is exactly what this program is. THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT IS EXCELLENT. I feel sorry for them because it takes both: a good product and good tech support. This does not format stage plays professionally. If you're like me, you don't have the time for all of this aggravation. Spend your money on the professional quality programs, work like a professional and spend the extra time that you're not being aggravated perfecting your craft. I'm giving it 2 stars for the tech support.
