Amazon.com: The lightest of the first three films, Lethal Weapon 3 finds everyone occupying comfortable positions like students who always choose to sit in the same classroom seats. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover return as LAPD partners whose working method consists of the former diving into danger and the latter holding back. (The sequence set in the parking garage of a building, in which Gibson inadvertently trips a switch that makes a timed explosive device speed up, is priceless.) Joe Pesci once again plays a motor-mouth pest, and while the story is pretty much forgettable, it does introduce the best new dynamic in the series, a romance between Gibson and Rene Russo's equally tough but attractive cop. --Tom Keogh
A fun, play it straight, cop action film This is the first Lethal Weapon movie I've seen, and I must say I was thoroughly entertained. Though it might have been a disappointment to some fans in the series, I found it refreshing to see this one first, why? Because I think I can judge it better as a stand alone movie this way.
In Lethal Weapon 3, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover once again play as a mismatched crime fighting team Martin Riggs and Roger Murtagh. Riggs is an implusive young man who enjoys being in the thick of things,he also puts together insane plans to defeate the badguys within the span of two seconds. Murtagh is a slower moving family man who enjoys sitting back and having a nice cup 'o' coffee. This time around they have to fight a former police officer gone bad, Jack Travis, who stores up illegal weapons, and sells them to the highest bidder. Murtagh and Riggs have to hunt down and find the main before he can let out an almost discontinued gun, an extremely dangerous, armor piercing weapon that has apparently gotten into the hands of teens on the streets.
Though not great, the films acting works, and is able to support the emotional developements of it's characters. The music was fun, but not quite fantastic. The action sequences were highly entertaining, suspenseful? No, but entertaining none the less.
Mel Gibson,Danny Glover,Joe Pesci,and Rene Russo (3.5/5) Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are back in action again,as Riggs and Murtaugh,two L.A. cops who were first introduced in the first Lethal Weapon movie.Joe Pesci returns as smart alec Leo Getz,though his role is smaller in this movie.However Rene Russo joins the gang this time around.as for the movie itself,i liked it as much as the second one.there's an exciting chase scene,some great fight scenes,and the movie is funnier than the first two.Not only do Gibson and Glover have their back and forth banter,but so do Gibson and Russo.they have great chemistry together and really work well of each other.the only thing i didn't like that much about this installment was that the story was pretty standard for the genre,and the bad guys were your typical generic,run of the mill crooks.but the performances,the comedy and the chemistry of the actors make up for that.for me,Lethal Weapon 3 is a 3.5/5
The Charm's Still There, But It's Rather Weak This Time Around Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) and Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) are still together, but Murtaugh is supposed to retire in eight days. As Murtaugh always says he's just "getting too old for this s**t." However, he loves his job and has no idea what he's going to do when he retires. Meanwhile he and Riggs become involved in a case involving a massive arms dealer. They are pulled from the case after internal affairs takes over, but through the help of Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) get a lead that internal had no knowledge of. It turns out that an ex-cop turned crook, Jack Travis (Stuart Wilson) is smuggling confiscated police weapons and selling them on the streets. Riggs and Murtaugh join forces with the chief internal affairs officer on the case, Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) to catch Travis in action and bring his illegal dealings to a close. Murtaugh takes the case very personally when he ends up killing one of the friends of his son, Nick (Damon Hines) in a shootout. Meanwhile, romance blossoms between Lorna and Riggs.
LETHAL WEAPON 3 is the weakest of the movies in the LETHAL WEAPON series. The plot attempts to have a subtle message about the evils of guns in the hands of normal citizens, but being an action movie, the message tends to take the focus off of the real point of the movie, the relationship between Murtaugh and Riggs. They've gone through a lot together and as Murtaugh prepares for retirement, their friendship becomes even deeper. The film seems lacking in action. Of course, it opens with the destruction of a huge building and ends in a coda after the credits with the same thing. Sandwiched in between are some action sequences, but the emotional instability tarnishes just about everything in the film and makes the action sequences seem rather low key.
Gibson and Glover are in top form and Joe Pesci steals most of the scenes he appears in again. Rene Russo is a nice addition to the cast, allowing Lorna to bring some balance to the usually insane Riggs. I also enjoyed the fact that Capt. Ed Murphy (Steve Kahan) had a larger role than usual. Overall, the film is basically an average action picture, but the chemistry between the two protagonists augments the movie a notch or two. Recommended for fans of the series or any fans of any of the stars.
Most Certainly Not a "dead issue!" First off, to paraphrase Riggs (Mel Gibson) anything I say 'ain't gonna be much' but I'll try anyhow. This, the third film in the Lethal Weapon series, is MUCH better than other reviews here and elsewhere say. Although 2 and four are my absoloute favorites, this is a GREAT film in and of itself. The acting is worth noting first of all: Mel Gibson gives his usual, very good, 'Lethal Weaponish' ( if you will) performance and Rene Russo really brings the character of Lorna Cole to life but I'd say without a doubt that the best acting comes from Danny Glover and Stuart Wilson. For his part Glover takes the hints of real drama farther than the end of LW2 and delivers a performance I beleive to be beyond any other in the series. He is funny early on but wondefully intense and half-crazed later on especially in the scenes where he is drunk and where he interrogates a teen gang member to trace the origins of a gun. Again I cannot emphasize enough- the opening moments of Rigg's and Murtaugh's dialogue on the boat is chiilling, all thanks to Mr. Glover. At the other end of the character list, Stuart Wilson gives a deliciously evil and pun-cracking performance as non-chalant ex-cop Jack Travis. Moreover, the pure intensity in his eyes during the finale and the over-the-top nature of his character make the best LW villain sicn Arjen Rudd of LW2 (the wonderful Joss Ackland.) Of course using the profits from his illegal activities to build a housing development is bit of strange, out-there idea but looking into it one can see that greed is behind it all. More high-points the script. The humor, the drama, the characterization, the romance. It is all there and in my opinion, never was it better balanced out in the sequels than here- especially with a poignant and powerfully acted subplot involving Murtaugh shooting his son's friend in self-defense. The action- the usual, exiting chases and gun/fist fights- are top notch and some unusual ideas are thrown in as Riggs kills one Travis' cronies by throwing gas on him in a burning building. Overall the pacing is great, with the opening setup especially welldone ( wait until you see it!) and the suspense and exitment don't let up, with the finale particularly satisifing and in many ways, admirably clever. Finally, the direction, angles etc are great as are the sunts (amazing really, music (praise to Clapton and Sanborn here) and FX. Well worth seeing for the emotionally mature and those who can stomach a little gore (prepare for the afformentioned Murtaugh subplot to painful and hard to watch, emotionally speaking.) 5/5
One of my Fvaorite ones I think the Lethal Weapon series should've just ended here. I mean I wanted more after this movie and years later we got the weak and overly silly Lethal Weapon 4. Lethal Weapon 3 has great action, great emotion and maybe even offers Gibson and Glover's best work together. Which is why they should've just ended things here. I mean Riggs just doesn't have the edge that made him cool in the first place in part 4. He's just an older goof ball who just pulls pranks on Glover and even doesn't have the long hair!
I also like the under-rated Stuart Wilson as the main villian here. He's about as crazy eyed as Riggs himself and was a better Lethal Weapon villian than Jet Li. Jet Li was cool in Lethal Weapon 4 but his character was just not built up enough and not as good as previous Lethal Weapon villians. I also like the Rene Russo and Mel Gibson relationship more here than in part 4. It's more fresh and funny here for him to have a woman who's about as nuts as him.
Joe Pesci is funny here too but with him around all the time after part 2, he's a like a tick that won't go away. Eventhough sadly, his story about his dead frog was the most emotion we got from Lethal Weapon 4. Here it's pretty heart felt when Glover accidently kills a teenager who's friends with his son. Plus as far as laughs go. Give me the scene here where Riggs makes friends with a vicious guard dog by acting like a dog. Over the scene with laughing gas in Lethal Weapon 4 any day.
