Editorial Review:
SquareSoft has always had a sure-fire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting story line is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene.

The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience.

The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president.

You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking

Pros:
  • A story to beat all stories
  • Characters worth caring about
  • Hey--it's from SquareSoft
  • Stunning animations
Cons:
  • Too many random battles
  • Combat is, as always, turn-based and offers minimal excitement
  • Weak souls might give up after two or three discs of play

5 out of 5 starsSpectacular
This one of the most impressive games for Playstation on the market. The graghics are absolutly incredible. The music is irritating at first, but grows on the gamer surprizingly fast. The gameplay is somewhat repetitive(mainly in cambat mode)but is still highly enjoyable. With its 4 discs,it should keep even a fast gamer busy for quite awhile.

2 out of 5 starsNot up to par
Look I'm one of Final Fantasy's greatest fans but this game really stunk. Compared to other Final Fantasy's it seemed somewhat shabby. The story line was confusing, there was only a few good songs in it and there were not enough side quests. However it did have excellent graphics and many random battles which some people like. I just think that unless you are a die-hard Final Fantasy fan like me you should go out and buy Final Fantasy 7 or even better Final Fantasy 3 (6).

3 out of 5 starsFinal Fantasy 8
I loved Final Fantasy 7 which is and always will be a classic hit. It introduced me to the entire series. But with FF8, Square ditched some longstanding RPG traditions and put me off. I own the game but it just couldn't hold me long enough to play it through. The story progresses too slowly and doesn't stand up to previous efforts. The graphics and engine are absolutely amazing but the gameplay changed too much. No magic points, only spells you could draw from enemies for an almost unlimited supply of spells. No materia, half of the elements from past games were ditched. In short, change isn't always good. I would just as soon wait for Final Fantasy 9, which is returning to the games' roots as a medievil epic.

5 out of 5 starsA Great Game
This Game Is Very Good. It Has everything Romance,Awesome PLot,and Chrachter Development.

This Is A great Game For Rpg Fans! It May Take awhile to Finish but its Awesome!

Final Fantasy 8 A-

5 out of 5 starsAWESOME GAME THE BEST RPG
This is the best game ever made, in my opinion. It's really more like a movie with the cutscenes and storyline. The graphics are absoulutely excellent. There are too many battles, and the game is really long, but it's definetly worth it. This isn't just something that RPG fans can enjoy. Anyone can. There is some violence, but it's not gory. The "Teen" rating was obviously given to the language, which can be pretty bad at times. But if you can overlook those minor details, this game is a must.
