This Australian box-office smash wasn't as successful as The Full Monty in American theaters, but it has something of the same buoyant spirit. The Castle actually plays better on the small screen; its relationship with its characters is much like the farcical intimacy of classic British sitcoms like Fawlty Towers, in which crazed behavior is balanced by the genuine warmth of the whole cast. Great comedy with a big heart. Saw this heart-warming film several years ago in an art theater and it's the only movie I've ever been to where the audience applauded. Have hunted for some time trying to find The Castle and was so happy to find it on Amazon. It is one of our favorite films. Shouldn't reveal too much of the story but it is basically about a man, his family and their neighbors who fight to keep their homes from being purchased by a large local airport, to build larger landing fields. It's a great story of family value, that your home is your castle ... it's a really great movie.
a trip out film saw this film late one night last week and I hadn't payed it much attention and then something told me to check this film out and I was laughing big time. the family is a trip and there different journeys is a real trip. i dug how everybody in the neighborhood is fighting for there property.
OMG was this funny! The uncut Aussie THE CASTLE The last film where I had so much fun was Lars and the Real Girl! Now, I laughed heartily and gleefully again at the Australian Indie film THE CASTLE (which if you catch it, is also on ON DEMAND right now...because the DVD is expensive!)
I sold Real Estate for nine years, so I was intimately acquainted with the dilemma facing Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton)and his family;his "castle",his "home",which is a ramshackled PUD tract house,built on a toxic waste site and sitting next to a booming airport with the pleasantly fresh smells of diesel fuel,is to be taken by "Imminent Domain",torn down,used to further the airstrip, and all this with meagre compensation from the Aussie Govt!" A MAN'S HOME IS HIS CASTLE!" protests the unbelieving Darryl. Well Darryl will not be deterred and his case simply must go to the Highest Court to be heard."It just isn't fair!"...now there's a legal argument. Follow Darryl and his cheery lobotomised brood through 90 minutes of sheer pandaemonium.This is as quirky and delightfully original as anything I have seen in recent memory.It is truly engaging and full of warmth and grand intention.The Aussies cherish this film and now so do I.Do what it takes to see this 1997 farce!
Australian comedy at it's best I love this movie because it's very funny and there are no weak links. Every character is perfect in their role. This is one of those classics that will have you quoting lines and asking friends if they've ever seen it. " It's just the vibe"...(you'll get it when you see the movie).
Inspirational Comedy The Castle is NOT a cocodile dundee type comedy. It is typical of other "serious" Australian films being producined at that time, with idealist themes. The theme of The Castle is "money can't buy happiness", however, comedy is cleverly used to subdue this unrealistic theme until the end of the movie. It was hard to accept that the Kerrigan's could be happy, and I was cringing at the stupidity of the characters throughout the film... but I slowly began to urge them on, and by the end of the film I felt like I could be have been one of them. The only thing that I could not accept was that tow-truck drivers are not as friendly as Darryl Kerrigan, and this profession did not suit his character.
