Amazon.com: While the cocktail lounge fad has seen more than a few musicians climb aboard as a career move, the members of Pink Martini are no bandwagon-riding aficionados. Fronted by pianist Thomas Lauderdale, Pink Martini is the real article--a band that approaches the music with unwavering seriousness yet never forgets the fun at the heart of it. Sympathique, the band's debut album reveals an incredibly diverse musical vocabulary on the part of frontman Lauderdale. And what singer China Forbes lacks in range and dynamics, she more than compensates for in attack, approach, and a clear understanding of the material. While most of the songs are upbeat, in the hands of Lauderdale and Forbes, "Qué será será," with its dark atmospherics should be rechristened "Qué será noir." --Wayne Pernu
Fantastic. ^ If you're throwing a cocktail party, you simply MUST have this playing in the background!
Astounding sophistication ^ I found this group quite by accident and I was immediately transformed into a fan of this beautiful work of musicianship and arrangement blend. I can only describe the music genre as "timeless". Some may call it "Lounge" but it defies description really. There are elements of jazz, Latin Jazz, big band, lounge, pop, world, cabaret and Showtunes as well as classical music in this carefully crafted style. I am inspired as a musician myself to listen to every bar of the compositions and individual instruments and how they are interwoven with the sultry vocals of a very talented China Forbes. The world collaborations are so genuinely inspiring as well and it astounds me how this orchestra has accomplished this so precisely. The music is sophisticated and classy in every sense of the word. I am thankful and in awe for the creative genius of the founder, Mr. Lauderdale.
Buyer Beware ^ I heard Pink Martini's version of Ravel's Bolero on the radio and found out it was on Sympathiqe. Beware, it is only on earlier versions of this CD. If you can find it with Bolero, it is well worth purchasing. I would only give this CD 3 stars for the later version without Bolero.
Beautiful music! ^ I've seen Pink Martini play with the SF symphony twice and loved them! So decided finally to purchase my 1st Pink Martini CD. I love the music! Very soothing and relaxing. Enjoy with a glass of wine!
great gift ^ this was a present to my cousin and friend - i have had this CD for many years and always enjoy it, it is timeless.
